Position Summary

The Machine Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of equipment used in nursery production and material handling activities. This role ensures machinery is operated according to established procedures, production goals are achieved, and quality standards are maintained. The Machine Operator performs equipment inspections, monitors machine performance, conducts basic troubleshooting, and supports overall nursery operations while maintaining a safe work environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Operate machinery and equipment according to established procedures and production schedules.
  • Perform pre-operational inspections to ensure equipment is in safe working condition.
  • Start, stop, monitor, and adjust machine settings as needed to maintain efficient operation.
  • Load raw materials, soil, containers, and supplies into machinery and remove finished products.
  • Monitor machine performance and identify operational issues or malfunctions.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and make minor adjustments to equipment as necessary.
  • Report equipment failures, safety concerns, and maintenance needs to supervisors.
  • Conduct routine cleaning and preventive maintenance on machinery and equipment.
  • Maintain production records, machine logs, and inspection documentation as required.
  • Inspect products during production to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Follow all company safety policies, operating procedures, and OSHA requirements.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Assist with material handling, loading, unloading, and other nursery operations as assigned.
  • Work collaboratively with supervisors and team members to meet production and operational goals.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong attention to safety, quality, and detail.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting, bending, standing, and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience operating industrial, agricultural, landscaping, or nursery equipment.
  • Forklift certification, or the ability to obtain certification.
  • Experience operating tractors, skid steers, potting machines, conveyors, or other nursery production equipment.
  • Basic mechanical troubleshooting and preventive maintenance experience.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and reach for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, rain, and dust.
  • Ability to safely operate machinery and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
