Job Summary
The Lewis F. Rogers Institute for Environmental and Spatial Analysis (IESA) at the University of North Georgia (UNG) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor of Spatial Information and Data Science. Appointments are set to begin as early as August 2026.

Responsibilities
  • Faculty members typically teach 12 hours per semester. These courses will include graduate and undergraduate courses.
  • The faculty member is also expected to engage in professional development and scholarly pursuits and involve graduate and undergraduate students in these endeavors.
  • In addition, the faculty member is expected to contribute to the Institute, University, and the discipline through appropriate service obligations and in the advising of students.
  • The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to graduate teaching, advising, curriculum development, and thesis supervision.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching graduate spatial information and data science and undergraduate spatial science and computing courses housed in the Lewis F. Rogers Institute for Environmental & Spatial Analysis at the University of North Georgia.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who also have experience in computer science, engineering, geoscience, environmental studies or other related fields.
  • Excellence in teaching, scholarly activity and university/community service is required for promotion and tenure. Active scholarship involving graduate and undergraduate students, advising students, service to the university and community, and active participation in institute activities are expected.
  • Also expected are maintaining a collegial work environment and professional development opportunities.

Required Qualifications
  • Applicants are required to have a PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, GIScience, Information Science, Spatial Data Science, Geoscience, Environmental Studies, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Python and experience with R and/or SQL for geospatial analysis
  • Familiarity with spatial data science or computational methods, including exposure to machine learning or AI approaches applied to spatial problems
  • Experience with geospatial libraries and tools (e.g., GeoPandas, ArcPy, or similar)
  • Evidence of effective teaching, mentoring, or the potential to teach and advise students
  • Demonstrated ability or strong potential to contribute to interdisciplinary research initiatives

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing, publishing, and managing Web GIS applications or services
  • Proficiency with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and cloud-based geospatial tools (e.g., ArcGIS Online, Google Earth Engine)
  • Experience with spatial and relational databases (e.g., PostGIS)
  • Experience with ArcGIS Enterprise or distributed/high-performance geospatial computing
  • Expertise in spatial analytics, quantitative methods, remote sensing, and/or geostatistics
  • Experience integrating machine learning or advanced data science approaches (e.g., scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow) into spatial analysis
  • Record of securing external funding or contributing to funded research projects
  • Experience in digital image processing, spatial informatics, or geovisualization
  • Background or experience in machine learning, AI applications for spatial data, and GeoAI
