Job Title: Joist Shop Welding Machine Operator (2nd Shift)

Job Description

Join a busy joist shop on 2nd shift, operating automated welding and related machinery to assemble structural steel joists for bridge work. You will work on an assembly line in a team environment, learning the equipment, reading schematics, and ensuring joists are produced safely, accurately, and efficiently in a heavy industrial setting.

Responsibilities

  • Operate weld machines to assemble structural steel joists according to production requirements and safety standards.
  • Monitor welding and other machinery continuously to ensure proper operation and product quality, reporting any issues promptly.
  • Work on an assembly line as part of a team to meet daily production goals and move joists through the fabrication process.
  • Read and interpret schematics and basic drawings to assemble joists correctly and verify measurements.
  • Learn and complete equipment training, then participate in welding classes to operate automated welding equipment effectively.
  • Operate laser machines or other production machinery as needed to support joist fabrication.
  • Handle materials as needed, including moving, staging, and organizing steel components in the joist shop.
  • Perform general labor tasks such as cleaning, sweeping, and shop upkeep to maintain a safe and organized work area.
  • Use hand tools, including tape measures and other basic tools, to verify dimensions and support assembly work.
  • Perform touch-up painting on finished products using standard, non-spray paint methods as directed.
  • Follow all safety procedures, including completing safety training before operating machinery and using required protective equipment.
  • Maintain consistent attendance and reliability to support production schedules and meet project deadlines.
  • Adapt to a loud, dirty, and heavy industrial environment, working with steel, welding operations, and large fabrication equipment.

Essential Skills

  • Ability to operate or learn to operate weld machines and related automated equipment in a manufacturing environment.
  • Comfort working in a heavy industrial atmosphere with extensive welding, metal fabrication, dirt, and loud noises.
  • Basic ability to read and understand schematics or simple drawings for assembly work.
  • Experience or exposure to trades, such as welding, mechanical work, or other industrial or technical schooling.
  • Capability to use hand tools, including tape measures, for accurate measurement and assembly.
  • Strong reliability and attendance, with the ability to work mandatory overtime and weekend shifts.
  • Willingness to complete safety training and follow all safety protocols before and during machine operation.
  • Physical ability to perform general labor tasks, including standing for long periods, handling materials, and working in varying temperatures.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Any MIG, TIG, or stick welding experience is a significant plus.
  • Previous experience in general labor, production, assembly, or manufacturing environments is helpful.
  • Comfort performing cleaning, sweeping, and general shop maintenance tasks.
  • Ability to perform touch-up painting using standard, non-spray paint methods.
  • No formal certifications are required; candidates with trade schooling or hands-on trade experience are strongly preferred

Work Environment

This role is based in a manufacturing plant where structural steel is fabricated for bridge work, with most cleanup and production activity occurring in the joist shop. The atmosphere is heavy industrial, involving extensive welding, metal fabrication, and operation of large machinery, with significant noise and exposure to dirt and metal dust. Temperatures can be HOT in the summer and COLD in the winter, so candidates should be comfortable working in non-climate-controlled conditions. This is a 2nd shift position with weekday schedules that may include 9-hour shifts from approximately 4:00 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. and Friday shifts from around 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m., or 8-hour shifts from about 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. The role involves working on an assembly line, operating welding and laser machines, handling materials, and performing general labor tasks in a production-focused environment, with required use of steel-toed boots and appropriate eye protection provided by the company.
