What is machine learning quantum computing?

Machine Learning Quantum Computing is an interdisciplinary field that combines principles of quantum computing with machine learning techniques. It aims to leverage the computational power of quantum computers to enhance the performance of machine learning algorithms, potentially solving complex problems more efficiently than classical computers. This area includes developing quantum algorithms for tasks such as classification, clustering, and optimization, as well as using machine learning to improve quantum hardware and error correction. Researchers expect that, as quantum hardware matures, this field could revolutionize data analysis, cryptography, and scientific discovery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine learning quantum computing specialist?

To thrive in Machine Learning Quantum Computing, you need strong foundations in quantum mechanics, linear algebra, and advanced machine learning concepts, typically supported by a degree in physics, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with quantum programming languages (such as Qiskit or Cirq), cloud-based quantum platforms, and proficiency in Python are usually required, alongside experience with relevant certifications or coursework. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective collaboration are vital soft skills in this interdisciplinary field. These competencies are crucial for driving innovation and bridging the gap between quantum computing and practical machine learning applications.

How do professionals in machine learning quantum computing typically collaborate with interdisciplinary teams?

Professionals in Machine Learning Quantum Computing often work closely with experts in physics, computer science, and engineering. Collaboration usually involves translating quantum concepts for machine learning specialists and vice versa, ensuring that algorithms are both theoretically sound and practically implementable on quantum hardware. Regular meetings, code reviews, and knowledge-sharing sessions are standard, as interdisciplinary insight is crucial for advancing research and developing scalable solutions. Effective communication and a willingness to learn from other domains are essential for success in these teams.

What is the difference between Machine Learning Quantum Computing vs Data Scientist?

Job description

Job Title: Senior Technical Program Manager
Job Type: Full-time
Job Location: Boston, MA
Reports to: Vice President of Quantum Computing Services
Summary
QuEra is seeking a Senior Technical Program Managerto lead program managementactivitiesaround product and service deliveryof QuEra's quantum computers, starting with Aquila and Gemini, and extending to future generations of QuEra systems.
This role is execution-oriented and inherently cross-functional, coordinating work across hardware and software engineering, research and operations. The role includes limited product management responsibilities, scoped to requirements collection and feedback, and is expected to work collaboratively with future dedicated product management hires.
This role is designed to fulfill these goals, and to evolve as the company grows and the needs change:
  • Ensure reliable delivery and operation of gate-based quantum computers,
  • Establish a structured feedback loop from customers and users back into engineering, and align customer projects for success,
  • Support the product development work on QuEra's systems towards industrial-grade, TRL=9 platforms, through disciplined program execution,
  • Enable progress tracking and transparent communication across all stakeholders.

Year 1 focus
The main focus in year 1 will be to support the success of QuEra's overall AIST program which consists of 4 threads centered around our first gate-based system Gemini:
  1. [Product] Launching two product lines on top of the on-prem Gemini machine at AIST: Gemini-QEC, a platform for error correction researchers, and Gemini-NISQ, a platform for NISQ-era application developers. Initial product launches will be followed by planned upgrades and feature releases in quick succession.
  2. [Customers & Projects] Enabling the success of concrete customers and customer projects on the Gemini machine at AIST, which divide into preview projects (leading up to each product/feature release and leveraging close collaboration with the machine team), and GA projects (following each product/feature release and utilizing the generally available capabilities). Customer success in this context will depend on a fine balance of customer experience, data quality, and timely execution of project phases.
  3. [Integration] Completing system integration with access/distribution partners, in two modalities: HPC integration, and cloud integration.
  4. [Development] Achieving milestones in the NEDO program focused on developing the hardware and software systems towards industrial-grade quantum computers by 2030. This development work is not independent of, but rather on the critical path for 1-3.

Key responsibilities
1. Product:
  • Translate high-level product goals and technical roadmap into executable plans, milestones, and dependencies.
  • Track risks, schedules, and cross-team deliverables to ensure on-time, high-quality product launches.

2. Customers and Projects
  • Act as the program coordination point for customer co-design and onboarding efforts.
  • Ensure customer expectations, constraints, and feedback are clearly communicated and tracked.
  • Support technical teams by managing structure, timelines, and communication.

3. Integration
  • Act as the program coordination point for integration activities, including alignment efforts and end-to-end tests.
  • Collect and synthesize requirements from integration partners and stakeholders, spanning functional and non-functional requirements (e.g. API payload vs API security).

4. Development
  • Align timelines, requirements and dependencies, with awareness of product, business and operational constraints.
  • Track progress and support documentation efforts.
  • Support reporting efforts for external stakeholders (e.g. NEDO program management).
  • Contribute to QuEra's readiness for scaling gate-based quantum computing beyond Gemini, including operational and organizational considerations.

To achieve a balanced success in 1-4 above, the role will take responsibility for managing machine time across activities, machine use agreements, and regulatory requirements (e.g. data privacy, network security, etc.).
Qualification & Profile
Required:
  • Engineering background (e.g., semiconductor, systems engineering, advanced computing infrastructure).
  • Experience in technical program management, system delivery, or execution of complex technical products.
  • Strong ability to coordinate across multiple teams and external stakeholders.
  • Comfort in customer-facing, execution-oriented roles.
  • Strong communication, documentation, and organizational skills.

Preferred:
  • Experience with on-premise deployments and security/network-constrained environments.
  • Exposure to quantum computing, HPC, or advanced computing platforms.
  • Experience working with government, national lab, or research customers.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new technical domains quickly.
