What is a machine learning QA engineer?

Machine Learning QA Engineers are professionals who specialize in testing and validating machine learning models and systems. They ensure that machine learning algorithms perform as expected, are reliable, and meet quality standards before deployment. Their role involves developing test cases, automating testing processes, analyzing results, and collaborating with data scientists and software engineers to improve model accuracy and robustness. They also help identify biases, data inconsistencies, and potential issues in the machine learning pipeline.

What are some common challenges faced by machine learning QA engineers when testing AI models, and how are they typically addressed?

Machine Learning QA Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring model accuracy across diverse datasets, reproducibility of test results, and validating the fairness and bias of AI outputs. Addressing these issues typically involves developing robust automated test frameworks, collaborating closely with data scientists to understand model behaviors, and implementing rigorous data validation and monitoring processes. Additionally, continuous learning is essential, as ML models evolve rapidly and require QA Engineers to stay updated on new testing methodologies and tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine learning QA engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Learning QA Engineer, you need a strong grasp of software testing principles, machine learning concepts, and proficiency in programming languages like Python, along with a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with testing frameworks (such as pytest), ML platforms (like TensorFlow or PyTorch), and experience with automated testing tools are typically required. Exceptional analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set standout candidates apart in this role. These skills and qualities are crucial to ensure the quality, reliability, and fairness of machine learning models before they are deployed to production.

What is the difference between Machine Learning Qa Engineer vs Data Scientist?

AspectMachine Learning Qa EngineerData Scientist
Required CredentialsBachelor's in CS, QA certifications, knowledge of ML modelsBachelor's/Master's in CS, statistics, data analysis
Work EnvironmentTesting labs, development teams, QA departmentsResearch, data analysis, modeling teams
Industry UsageTech companies, AI startups, software firmsTech, finance, healthcare, research institutions
Common Search/ComparisonYesYes

While both roles involve working with machine learning, a Machine Learning Qa Engineer primarily focuses on testing and validating ML models to ensure quality and performance. In contrast, a Data Scientist analyzes data, develops models, and derives insights. The roles often collaborate but serve different stages of the ML development lifecycle.

Is a machine learning QA engineer still in demand?

Machine Learning QA engineers are in demand due to the increasing adoption of AI and machine learning systems across industries. They play a critical role in testing and validating models, often requiring skills in programming, data analysis, and familiarity with tools like Python and TensorFlow. As AI integration grows, the need for specialized QA engineers in this field is expected to remain strong.

Job description

QA Engineer
At Rectangle Health, we believe that our team members are our most important asset. We grow our team by hiring best-in-class talent. We encourage all employees to contribute their individual talents and ideas to strengthen our team, our brand, and our services. We promote a culture that serves to empower and motivate employees beyond the standard corporate rhetoric one might see on motivational posters. Employees understand their individual roles in serving our customers, and this clarity of purpose encourages high job performance.
Position Overview
If you are looking to align yourself with two of the largest growth industries: healthcare and technology, while joining one of the fastest-growing companies within those segments, Rectangle Health is the place for you!
We are seeking a highly skilled, detail-oriented, and self-directed QA Engineer with a strong background in automated UI and API testing. The ideal candidate will have 2-4 years of experience in quality assurance, with a proven track record of building and maintaining robust test automation frameworks. As a QA Engineer, you will be an essential part of our Engineering department, helping to maintain and improve the innovative solutions that thousands of healthcare providers rely on every day. Your work safeguards the quality and reliability of our products, giving the organization the confidence to deliver quickly without compromising the trust our customers place in us.
Beyond technical ability, we're looking for someone who takes ownership, works proactively across teams, and follows through reliably once ramped up on their product area. Experience in the Payments domain and performance testing is a strong plus. You will receive the training, tools, and support to keep growing as a QA Engineer, including hands-on access to cloud environments and AI-assisted development tools.
Primary Job Duties:
  • Test Automation: Design, develop, and maintain automated test scripts for UI and API testing across functional, regression, integration, and end-to-end coverage.
  • Test Planning & Strategy: Contribute to test planning, test reviews, and the continuous improvement of QA processes: helping decide what to test, not just how to implement it.
  • Cross-Team Collaboration: Collaborate with developers, product managers, and other QA engineers to understand requirements and ensure comprehensive test coverage.
  • Requirement Clarification: Proactively follow up with product and engineering to clarify requirements when ticket or acceptance details are incomplete.
  • Defect Reporting: Execute and analyze automated test results and report defects with detailed documentation.
  • CI/CD Integration: Integrate automated tests into CI/CD pipelines.
  • Documentation Ownership: Anticipate documentation needs and initiate them: test coverage, processes, and automation workflows.
  • Agile Collaboration: Participate in sprint ceremonies and advocate for quality throughout the development lifecycle in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • 2-4 years of experience in QA engineering with a focus on automation.
  • Proficiency in automated UI testing frameworks, preferably Playwright with JS/TypeScript.
  • Strong hands-on experience with API automation.
  • Solid understanding of QA methodologies, tools, and processes.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and CI/CD tools (GitHub Actions).
  • Experience working in an Agile/Scrum development environment.
  • Experience working with AI coding assistants (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude) to accelerate test development and debugging.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in the Payments domain.
  • Exposure to performance testing tools (e.g., K6).
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms (e.g., AWS).
What We're Looking For:
  • Works independently once onboarded and manages priorities with minimal oversight.
  • Proactive - anticipates needs and moves work forward without waiting to be prompted on every step.
  • Collaborates effectively across engineering, product, and QA teams.
  • Highly organized, with strong follow-through and ownership of work through completion.
  • Resourceful - uses available documentation, tools, and data to find answers and gather information independently.
  • Receptive to feedback and committed to continuous learning and growth.

Compensation & Benefits:
  • $90,000 - $115,000 (commensurate with experience)
  • Competitive Medical Health Plans, Low, Mid, High.
    • Employer Paid Low Medical Plan for Employee & Dependents (HSA Eligible)
    • Employer Paid Dental & Vision for Employee
    • Employer Paid Life Insurance for Employee
    • Employer Paid Long-term Disability for Employee
    • Employer Paid Hospital Confinement for Employee ~ (If enrolled in Medical)
    • + Voluntary Supplemental Insurance Coverage Options
  • 15 days PTO & 7 Sick Days Annually
  • 10 Fixed Paid Holidays Off Annually
  • 401(k) Matching up to 3%
