What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Learning Object Detection Engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Machine Learning Object Detection Engineer, you need a solid background in computer science, mathematics, and deep learning principles, often backed by a relevant degree and experience in computer vision. Familiarity with frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, and OpenCV, as well as experience with annotation tools and GPU computing, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams and addressing complex challenges. These competencies ensure accurate model development, efficient deployment, and continual improvement of object detection systems in real-world applications.

What are some common challenges faced when working on machine learning object detection projects?

One of the main challenges in machine learning object detection roles is dealing with the quality and quantity of annotated data, as accurate labeling is essential for model performance. Another common challenge is managing variations in object scale, lighting, and occlusion within real-world images, which can affect detection accuracy. Additionally, balancing model accuracy with computational efficiency—especially for real-time applications—often requires careful model selection and optimization. Collaboration with data engineers and domain experts is also typical to ensure data relevance and model applicability.

What is machine learning object detection?

Machine learning object detection is a field within artificial intelligence that focuses on identifying and locating objects within images or videos. It uses algorithms and deep learning models, such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), to analyze visual data and predict the presence and position of various objects. Object detection is widely used in applications like autonomous vehicles, security surveillance, and image search. The process typically involves training models on labeled datasets so they can accurately detect and classify multiple objects in complex scenes.

Job description

About accentedge Health

accentedge Health is a Chicago-headquartered medical-AI company applying artificial intelligence and breakthrough multiomics science to early cancer detection, with a vision of a future where cancer no longer claims lives. Our foundational model, ABCD (AI Biomarker Cancer Detection), and our clinician-facing platform, doctari, are deployed in partnership with leading comprehensive cancer centers, major pharmaceutical organizations, and the U.S. Federal Government.

About the Role

The Chief Technology & AI Officer (CTO/CAIO) owns the technology vision that powers ABCD and the doctari clinical delivery platform. This executive leads software engineering, infrastructure, MLOps, and AI development, and is accountable for a cloud-first, compliant, high-availability platform aligned to HIPAA, SOC 2 Type II, HITRUST, and a FedRAMP Moderate path.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set and execute the technology and AI strategy across the doctari platform, ABCD model serving, and the broader cloud infrastructure.
  • Lead the Software & Infrastructure Engineering and AI Development & Model Management teams (24 staff at full occupancy).
  • Own the security and compliance posture for technology: HIPAA Security Rule, SOC 2 Type II, HITRUST, FedRAMP Moderate path, and ISO/IEC 27001 readiness.
  • Direct the on-prem GPU pod strategy for interactive experimentation and air-gapped partner evaluation, alongside cloud-first training and inference.
  • Establish model governance, the model registry, evaluation harness, and bias/drift monitoring frameworks.
  • Ensure high-availability hosting and regulated data handling for hospital and pharma IT integrations.
Required Qualifications
  • 15+ years in software engineering and technology leadership, including 5+ years as a senior technology executive.
  • Proven experience building and operating regulated, high-availability SaaS platforms (healthcare, fintech, or similarly regulated domains).
  • Strong grounding in machine learning systems, MLOps, and cloud architecture (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
  • Demonstrated ownership of security and compliance frameworks (HIPAA, SOC 2, HITRUST, or FedRAMP).
  • Track record leading and scaling engineering and ML organizations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with FedRAMP Moderate authorization for federal workloads.
  • Background in healthtech, medical AI, or genomics data platforms.
  • Familiarity with 21 CFR Part 11 electronic records requirements.
A Day in the Role

The CTO/CAIO splits time between engineering and AI zones, partner integration discussions, and security/compliance reviews, and is the executive sponsor for FedRAMP and SOC 2 evidence cycles. Based at the Chicago HQ; hybrid flexibility with regular on-site presence.

Compensation & Benefits

Salary commensurate with experience. accentedge offers a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage; equity participation; 401(k); generous paid time off; and a WELL-aligned workplace featuring sit-stand desks, on-site wellness and quiet spaces, healthy hydration and café amenities, and end-of-trip facilities for commuters.
