Job description

Role Overview

The College of Engineering Makerspace Coordinator (EMC) serves as the operational and programmatic lead for the College of Engineering Makerspace. The position is responsible for maintaining a safe, innovative, accessible, and highly utilized engineering prototyping, fabrication, and experiential learning environment that supports the educational, research, innovation, entrepreneurship, outreach, and workforce development missions of the College of Engineering. The EMC oversees all operational aspects of the makerspace, including facility coordination, equipment maintenance, user support services, inventory and supply management, safety compliance, equipment lifecycle management, operational workflow development, and makerspace accessibility. The EMC develops and implements operational procedures, safety protocols, training requirements, equipment certification programs, and preventative maintenance schedules. The position also evaluates emerging technologies, recommends operational improvements, manages expenditures, and assists with budget planning and financial reporting. The EMC supervises, trains, and coordinates student employees and makerspace volunteers, establishes customer service standards, and promotes an inclusive maker culture. The EMC supports integration of makerspace technologies into curricular and coโ€‘curricular activities and collaborates with university units to maintain efficient operations. The position requires strong technical, operational, organizational, managerial, financial, and interpersonal skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic engineering environment.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelorโ€™s degree in Engineering or Technology from an accredited institution and a minimum of 2 years of documented experience in a lab or machine shop setting; alternatively, an Associate degree with a minimum of 4 years documented experience. Experience must include operational management of makerspaces, fabrication laboratories, machine shops, or related technical environments, including equipment maintenance, operational coordination, safety compliance, inventory management, user support, and supervision of staff, students, or volunteers.

Preferred Qualifications

Masterโ€™s or Ph.D. in a related field. Preferred experience includes makerspace leadership, innovation programming, curriculum or workshop development, experiential learning support, startup or prototype development support, industry collaboration, outreach programming, and strategic operational planning within higherโ€‘education or engineering environments.
