Job description

Primary Responsibilities

Fleet Management & Maintenance

The Equipment Manager develops and implements comprehensive maintenance programs for all dredging equipment, including hydraulic and mechanical dredges, support vessels, excavators, pumps, and related machinery. This includes scheduling preventive maintenance, coordinating repairs, maintaining detailed equipment records, and ensuring all machinery meets operational specifications and regulatory requirements.

Equipment Procurement & Asset Management

Evaluates equipment needs and recommends purchases, rentals, or disposal of assets. Manages equipment inventory, tracks depreciation and lifecycle costs, and develops specifications for new equipment acquisitions. Negotiates with vendors and suppliers for parts, services, and equipment purchases while maintaining relationships with manufacturers and dealers.

Operations Support

Coordinates equipment deployment to project sites and ensures adequate equipment availability to meet project schedules. Works closely with project managers and field supervisors to understand equipment requirements and resolve equipment-related issues that impact operations. Manages equipment mobilization and demobilization activities.

Safety & Compliance

Ensures all equipment meets OSHA, Coast Guard, and environmental regulations. Maintains required certifications, inspections, and documentation. Implements safety protocols for equipment operation and maintenance activities. Conducts equipment safety audits and investigates equipment-related incidents.

Budget & Cost Control

Develops and manages equipment maintenance and repair budgets. Tracks equipment operating costs, analyzes utilization rates, and identifies cost-saving opportunities. Approves maintenance and repair expenditures within established authority limits.

Team Leadership

Supervises mechanics, maintenance technicians, and equipment operators. Provides training on equipment operation, maintenance procedures, and safety protocols. Conducts performance evaluations and manages staffing requirements for the maintenance department.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in equipment management, preferably in dredging, marine construction, or heavy civil construction
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic dredging equipment, marine vessels, and heavy machinery
  • Understanding of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, and mechanical components
  • Familiarity with OSHA regulations, maritime safety standards, and environmental compliance requirements
  • Proficient in equipment management software and maintenance tracking systems
  • Valid driver's license; CDL preferred
  • Ability to travel to project sites as needed

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cutter suction dredges, hopper dredges, or hydraulic excavator dredges
  • Marine engineer license or heavy equipment certifications
  • Previous supervisory experience in a maintenance environment
  • Project management or planning experience
  • Knowledge of GPS and dredging instrumentation systems
