The Work You Will Do:
DOT Internship - D5 - Fall 2026 Semester / August to December
This position will provide the intern with knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience in the transportation industry, specifically within the Brevard Operations Unit. The selected candidate will perform routine tasks under direct supervision and work across several functional areas within the unit. The intern will also actively participate in team projects and contribute to the Brevard Operations Unit's goals and overall mission.

Your Specific Responsibilities:
The Construction Support Office is staffed by engineers dedicated to providing practical assistance and guidance across multiple disciplines. Our mission is to strengthen partnerships, improve policies, and enhance procedures related to construction contracts. As an intern in this office, you will gain exposure to both Construction and Maintenance disciplines, allowing you to develop a well-rounded understanding of our operations and the work that supports them.
The intern will participate in and assist with various engineering activities, including:
  • Assess proposed driveway connections in accordance with the Florida Administrative Code and FDOT standards and criteria.
  • Review and assess proposed drainage connections in compliance with applicable Florida Administrative Code requirements and FDOT standards.
  • Review driveway, drainage, and utility permits.
  • Review Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) plans.
  • Learn how to process permits and perform field reviews with permit coordinators.
  • Assist construction project managers on various construction-related projects.
  • Assist with and review monthly estimates for construction projects.
  • Generate monthly reports using Microsoft Office and departmental database programs.

The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of:
  • Basic engineering principles and concepts.
  • Introductory knowledge of roadway design, drainage, or construction processes.
  • Familiarity with Florida Administrative Code or FDOT standards.

Skills in:
  • Use of Personal Computer (PC) and Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Organization, time management, and task prioritization.

Ability to:
  • Understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Plan, organize and coordinate work assignments.
  • Communicate effectively with others and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age.
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States and provide identification supporting citizenship or authority to work for the duration of program participation.
  • Participants are required to comply with all statutes and rules and the Department's policies, procedures, regulations, and Code of Ethics.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Students majoring in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Students with an academic status of Junior or above.
