About the Role

Information Technology Interns at Caterpillar perform the same challenging work assignments as our new full-time hires. We work with our teams to ensure that every intern gains the appropriate professional and personal growth necessary to be successful in a corporate environment. This position is a great way to gain hands-on experience by supporting IT operations at a world-leading manufacturing company.

What You Will Do

You'll join a team with diverse project responsibilities and have valuable networking opportunities with all levels of Caterpillar employees. The internship is a 40-hour-per-week assignment lasting 12 weeks. You can focus on building professional abilities in roles including (but not limited to):

  • Assist in the development, testing, and implementation of IT solutions.
  • Support IT team with troubleshooting and resolving technical issues.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand and document business requirements.
  • Participate in the maintenance and upgrade of IT systems and infrastructure.
  • Conduct research on emerging technologies and provide recommendations.
  • Help in the creation of technical documentation and user guides.
  • Perform data analysis and generate reports to support decision-making.

What You Have - Skills and Experiences

  • Programming & Software Development: Knowledge of one or more programming languages such as Java, Python, C++, or JavaScript, with an understanding of software development methodologies including Agile and Scrum.
  • Web Development: Experience with web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, with an understanding of modern web application development concepts.
  • Cloud & Database Technologies: Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud) and basic knowledge of SQL and database management systems such as MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server.
  • Technical Foundations: Understanding of operating systems including Windows, Linux, and macOS, as well as networking concepts such as TCP/IP, DNS, and network protocols.
  • Automation & Emerging Technologies: Exposure to scripting, automation, or technical problem-solving through tools and technologies such as Python, APIs, AI, machine learning, or infrastructure automation.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities, learn quickly, collaborate with diverse teams, and contribute to an inclusive and productive work environment.

Internship Program Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled full-time at a 4-year accredited university/college in one of the following fields of study: Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Management Information Systems, Cybersecurity, Data Analytics or any technical related degree at the time of application and throughout the program.
  • Must have 15 completed semester hours before the start of the internship.

If a transfer student, must have 12 semester hours completed at a 4-year university.

  • Minimum 3.0/4.0 Cumulative Grade Point Average (no rounding) at current institution.
  • Must be able to relocate at indicated work location for the duration of the internship and complete daily work commute using reliable transportation.

Top Candidates will also have

  • Demonstrated leadership that requires organizing or working with groups.
  • Experience in project work.
  • Relevant internship or work experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills; PowerPoint, Word and Excel skills well-developed.
  • Ability to effectively articulate and summarize analytical data for leadership.

Summary Pay Range:

$22.50 - $40.25

Intern Hourly Rate:

An intern's hourly rate is based on the major/degree being pursued and the number of completed academic hours achieved before the start of the internship.
