What is a machine learning contract?

A Machine Learning Contract job is a temporary or project-based role where professionals develop and implement machine learning models for a company. Contractors may work on tasks such as data preprocessing, model training, evaluation, and deployment. These roles are often remote or short-term, allowing companies to hire expertise for specific projects without long-term commitments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in a machine learning contract, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Learning Contract professional, you need a solid background in programming (Python, R), data analysis, and machine learning algorithms, usually supported by a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and Scikit-learn, as well as experience with cloud platforms like AWS or Azure, is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, time management, and effective communication are standout soft skills in contract-based roles. These competencies are crucial for efficiently delivering project-based solutions, collaborating with clients, and staying adaptable to varied organizational needs.

What are the typical responsibilities and workflow for a machine learning contract?

As a Machine Learning Contract professional, you’ll often be brought in to design, build, and deploy machine learning models tailored to a client’s specific challenges, ranging from data preprocessing and exploratory analysis to model selection and performance tuning. You may also be responsible for documenting your work, presenting results to stakeholders, and advising on best practices for model integration. Contract positions frequently involve collaborating remotely with cross-functional teams and meeting project milestones within set timelines. This role is ideal for those who enjoy variety, autonomy, and leveraging their expertise across different industries and datasets.

Senior Robotics Software Engineer (Full Stack)

Integrated Computer Solutions, Inc.

Wilmington, MA • On-site

Contractor

Posted 13 days ago

Job description

Location/Eligibility: This is a contract position based in Massachusetts. You must be able to commute to the Wilmington area onsite at least 3 days a week. For this contract, there is no visa sponsorship available.
We are seeking a Senior Robotics Software Engineer (Full Stack) to contribute broadly across our entire autonomous navigation and manipulation stack. In this role, you will work closely with our core team to design, build, and debug features that directly control how our robots perceive, navigate, and interact with the physical world. If you are an adaptable developer who loves moving from high-level autonomy logic down to physical hardware bring-up, you will thrive in this high-velocity environment.
Core Responsibilities
  • Full-Stack Feature Development: Design, implement, and test new capabilities across the core robotics software stack using ROS 2 in both C++ and Python.
  • Navigation & Manipulation: Contribute to the development and tuning of motion planning, localized navigation, and robotic manipulation pipelines.
  • System Integration: Collaborate with specialized middleware and infrastructure engineers to integrate machine learning models, sensor streams, and hardware drivers.
  • Triage & Debugging: Diagnose, debug, and resolve complex system-level software issues both in simulation environments and on live physical robots.

Technical Requirements (Must-Have)
  • Robotics Domain Experience: Proven track record of developing software for autonomous systems or robotic platforms.
  • ROS 2 Proficiency: Strong, hands-on development experience within the ROS 2 ecosystem.
  • Polyglot Coding: Fluency in Modern C++ and/or Python, along with clean coding practices and solid algorithm design.
  • Linux Environment: Comfortable working, debugging, and profiling software within a Linux (Ubuntu) environment.

Preferred Qualifications (Nice-to-Have)
  • Real Robot Deployment: Extensive experience with hardware bring-up and testing software on real, physical robots (not just running algorithms in simulation).
  • Specialized Robotics Modules: Familiarity with modern perception, classic/advanced control theory, or machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch).
  • Sensor Integration: Experience interfacing with sensors common to robotics like LiDAR, IMUs, or RGBD/Stereo cameras.

Are you the right fit?
You are a highly adaptable engineer who doesn't say "that's not my department." You are equally comfortable writing highly optimized C++ code, writing quick Python test scripts, or grabbing a screwdriver to check a sensor connection on the physical platform. You thrive in a high-velocity environment where your code directly affects physical machines moving in the real world.
