What is a Machine Learning Biomedical Internship?

A Machine Learning Biomedical Internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates work with professionals to apply machine learning techniques in the biomedical field. Interns typically assist with data analysis, model development, and research projects that involve biological or medical data. The goal is to gain practical experience in using artificial intelligence to solve healthcare challenges, such as disease prediction, medical imaging, or drug discovery. These internships often require knowledge of programming languages like Python and familiarity with machine learning frameworks. They provide valuable hands-on experience and networking opportunities for those interested in biomedical data science careers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Machine Learning Biomedical Intern, and why are they important?

To excel as a Machine Learning Biomedical Intern, you need a solid background in computer science, statistics, and biology, often supported by coursework or a degree in related fields. Familiarity with programming languages like Python or R, experience with machine learning libraries (such as TensorFlow or scikit-learn), and knowledge of data analysis tools are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly are crucial soft skills. These competencies enable interns to develop effective models, collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, and contribute meaningful insights to biomedical research projects.

What types of projects do interns typically work on during a Machine Learning Biomedical Internship?

Interns in Machine Learning Biomedical roles often contribute to projects involving the development and validation of algorithms for analyzing medical data, such as imaging, genomics, or electronic health records. They may assist with data preprocessing, model training, and performance evaluation under the guidance of experienced researchers or engineers. Collaboration is common, as interns often work closely with interdisciplinary teams including data scientists, clinicians, and software engineers. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to real-world biomedical challenges while strengthening both technical and communication skills.

About the job

An established medical device company is seeking a Principal Scientist, AI/ML to help build and scale next-generation AI-enabled technologies focused on procedural imaging, computer vision, and surgical workflow optimization. The organization is investing heavily in AI/ML capabilities as part of a broader initiative tied to procedural video analysis, imaging systems, and physician-facing clinical technologies within the MedTech space.

This is a highly hands-on role at the intersection of AI/ML, medical imaging, and product development. The ideal candidate has experience building applied machine learning systems in healthcare or medical device environments and is comfortable operating directly within fast-paced, execution-oriented teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Own AI/ML model architecture, technical direction, and scientific execution across new product initiatives

• Design and support machine learning pipelines, dataset strategy, validation workflows, and evaluation methodologies

• Partner closely with software engineering, R&D, and clinical stakeholders throughout development and deployment

• Help define scalable infrastructure, deployment strategy, and data management processes for AI-enabled systems

• Attend physician visits and procedural environments to better understand workflows, data generation, and real-world product applications

• Drive highly applied AI/ML research focused on product-oriented and commercially scalable outcomes

• Help establish best practices and foundational processes as the organization builds out its AI/ML capability

Your Experience

• Strong hands-on experience building and deploying AI/ML systems in healthcare, MedTech, imaging, or related technical environments

• Proven track record bringing products or technologies from development through commercialization

• Experience working with imaging data, computer vision, video analysis, or procedural/surgical datasets is highly preferred

• Ability to communicate effectively across technical teams, leadership, and physician stakeholders

• Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, AI/ML, Physics, or a related technical discipline

• Comfortable operating in fast-moving, highly collaborative, and execution-driven environments

• Experience within startup or growth-stage MedTech organizations is strongly preferred

Additional Details

• Hybrid preferred with approximately 3 days/week on-site

• Travel expected approximately every 2–3 weeks during the first year

• Competitive compensation package including bonus and equity
