Machine Assistant information

What is a machine assistant?

Machine assistants are workers who help operate, maintain, and monitor machinery in various industries, such as manufacturing, packaging, or construction. They typically assist machine operators by preparing materials, loading and unloading machines, performing routine maintenance, and ensuring equipment runs smoothly. Machine assistants play a key role in supporting efficient production processes and workplace safety. Their responsibilities may vary depending on the industry and the type of machinery they work with.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a machine assistant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Machine Assistant, you need basic mechanical aptitude, attention to detail, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with industrial machinery, safety protocols, and possibly certifications such as OSHA training are commonly required. Reliability, teamwork, and strong communication skills help you efficiently support machine operators and maintain a safe work environment. These skills ensure smooth production processes, reduce downtime, and uphold workplace safety standards.

What are some common challenges faced by machine assistants when supporting production machinery, and how can these be managed?

Machine Assistants often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting minor mechanical issues, maintaining consistent production speed, and ensuring safety protocols are strictly followed. Adapting to rapidly changing production schedules and learning to operate different types of machinery can also be demanding. These challenges can be managed by proactively communicating with supervisors, following maintenance schedules, and seeking training opportunities to become more familiar with various equipment. Team collaboration and attention to detail are key to effectively overcoming daily obstacles in this role.

What is the difference between Machine Assistant vs Machine Operator?

Job Title: Saw OperatorJob Description

The Saw Operator works on 2nd shift (2:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m.) or 3rd shift (10:00 p.m.-6:30 a.m.) in a metals service center, cutting aviation- and marine-grade metals to precise customer specifications. This role operates band saws and metal saws, uses forklifts and overhead equipment to move material, and ensures all orders are processed accurately, safely, and on time in a fast-paced production environment.

Responsibilities
  • Operate one or more plate and bar saws with expert mechanical proficiency to cut material to exact customer specifications.
  • Process orders according to cut-to-size requirements, ensuring all orders are completed accurately and on time without exception.
  • Pull, stage, and prepare metal stock at the saw for processing.
  • Retrieve material from plate racks using a fork truck and move materials safely throughout the service center.
  • Measure material using tape measures, micrometers, nibblers, calipers, and other precision tools to verify exact dimensions.
  • Record and enter detailed cut specifications on the appropriate forms for accurate data entry into the computer system.
  • Safely and properly operate cranes and fork trucks, applying safe rigging practices at all times.
  • Assist with packaging outbound shipments, receiving incoming materials, and participating in weekly inventory cycle counts.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe immediate work area throughout the shift.
  • Follow all safety rules, regulations, and quality standards established by the facility.
  • Adhere to all handbook policies and procedures, including operational, safety, and conduct guidelines.
  • Work independently on assigned tasks while accepting direction and collaborating with team members as needed.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with co-workers, customers, and suppliers to support smooth operations.
  • Apply strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management skills to meet production and delivery deadlines.
Essential Skills
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of 1 year of saw operation experience in aviation or a similar field.
  • Minimum of 1+ years of manufacturing or warehouse material handling and forklift experience.
  • Two or more years of related experience or training working with saws and/or production machinery.
  • One or more years of experience in the metals service center industry.
  • Ability to operate band saws and metal saws, including Metlsaw or similar machinery.
  • Proficiency in reading tape measures and using precision measuring tools such as micrometers, calipers, and nibblers.
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to read and calculate numbers and data accurately, including basic math used in measurements and cutting.
  • Good written and oral communication skills for documenting specifications and coordinating with team members.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks while accepting direction when required.
  • Ability to maintain high integrity and positive working relationships with co-workers, customers, and suppliers.
  • Strong work ethic and self-motivation to meet production goals and quality standards.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally, and to push/pull 25-50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to stand for most of the shift and perform frequent bending, climbing, kneeling, crawling, twisting, balancing, and reaching.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • One or more years of experience in the metals service center industry is preferred beyond the minimum requirements.
  • Experience operating any type of production or manufacturing machinery for 6+ months is considered a strong plus.
  • Comfort working in a warehouse environment that is not climate controlled but uses seasonal heating and ventilation.
  • Attention to detail when handling aviation-grade (2,000 and 7,000 series) and marine-grade (5,000 series) metals.
  • Ability to use close vision (clear vision at 36 inches or less) for precision measurements and machine operation.
  • Commitment to following established safety practices and quality procedures.
  • Reliability in adhering to shift schedules and production timelines.
Why Work Here?

You join a smaller, close-knit local operation where approximately 35 colleagues work together in a collaborative, supportive environment. The warehouse is designed to be comfortable, with heaters in the winter and open doors with large fans in the summer to keep air circulating. You benefit from clear processes, stable shift schedules, and the opportunity to build specialized skills in aviation- and marine-grade metals, saw operation, and material handling. The culture emphasizes safety, integrity, and strong work ethic, offering a setting where your contribution is visible and valued, and where you can grow your technical expertise in a hands-on industrial environment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a metals service center warehouse that is not fully climate controlled but is maintained as a comfortable environment. In colder months, heaters provide warmth, and in warmer months, large doors are opened and industrial fans circulate air throughout the facility. The work involves standing for most of the shift, frequent use of hands and fingers to handle materials and tools, and regular bending, climbing, kneeling, crawling, twisting, balancing, and reaching. You frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds, and you push or pull between 25 and 50 pounds throughout the day. The environment includes band saws, metal saws (including Metlsaw or similar equipment), forklifts, cranes, and precision measuring tools such as tape measures, micrometers, nibblers, and calipers. Work is performed on 2nd shift (2:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m.) or 3rd shift (10:00 p.m.-6:30 a.m.), following established safety rules, quality standards, and operational procedures.
