What is an MLB player?

MLB players are professional athletes who play baseball for teams in Major League Baseball, the highest level of professional baseball in the United States and Canada. These players compete during the MLB season, which consists of 162 games per team, culminating in the playoffs and the World Series. MLB players are known for their exceptional athletic skill, strategic understanding of the game, and commitment to training and teamwork. They can be drafted from college, high school, or international leagues, and often move up through minor league affiliates before reaching the major leagues.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an MLB player?

To thrive as an MLB player, you need exceptional athletic ability, advanced baseball skills, and significant experience in competitive leagues, often demonstrated through college or minor league play. Familiarity with advanced training equipment, video analysis tools, and adherence to league rules and regulations are also crucial. Strong teamwork, mental resilience, and discipline are standout soft skills for this high-pressure environment. These abilities ensure peak performance, consistent improvement, and the ability to compete at the highest level of professional baseball.

What challenges do MLB players face during the long baseball season, and how do teams support them?

MLB players often deal with the physical and mental demands of a 162-game season, including frequent travel, limited recovery time, and high performance expectations. To help manage these challenges, teams provide resources such as athletic trainers, sports psychologists, and nutritionists. Players also benefit from structured rest days, advanced medical support, and team camaraderie to maintain their health and motivation throughout the season.

The Financial Analyst will also serve as the Systems expert for all system and reporting functions in the Finance department. This role is expected to be a high performer who can operate effectively in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. The Analyst will work directly with finance leadership supporting the financial planning, analysis and reporting activities across MLB Network, MLB Local Media, and other affiliated entities.
Responsibilities:

  • Prepare financial presentations and executive-level reporting for CFO and senior leadership.
  • Maintain and improve models supporting partnership economics, outside production, and intercompany activity.
  • Develop working knowledge of MLB Network's lines of business, including Outside Production partnerships, local media, and workforce economics, and take ownership of the financial analysis supporting each area.

Systems & Process
  • Build and maintain automated workflows that connect financial data across ERP, reporting, and operational systems.
  • Develop and own data extracts, reconciliations, and reporting pipelines that support the close process.
  • Partner with IT and Finance on systems implementation and integration work (ERP, HR/payroll systems, reporting platforms).
  • Identify manual processes and develop scalable solutions to improve efficiency and operational effectiveness.

Stakeholder Partnership
  • Serve as a day-to-day analytical resource to the Sr. Manager, FP&A.
  • Support ad hoc analyses and special projects for CFO and department heads.
  • Interface with department managers on budget inquiries, accruals, and variance explanations.

Qualifications and Skills:
  • 3-5 years of experience in FP&A, financial analysis, or a hybrid finance/analytics role preferred.
  • Experience preparing and posting journal entries - you understand debits, credits, and what it means to close under deadline.

  • Experience with ERPs such as Oracle Fusion and BI tools such as Preql, Board, Tableau, Power BI, Adaptive Planning, or other comparable platforms is required.
  • Experience in television, advertising, affiliate sales, or knowledge of production finance/accounting is a plus.
  • Strong verbal, written, and presentation skills, with the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across the organization.
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities, drive process improvements, and operate effectively in a dynamic environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel and experience with financial reporting systems.
  • Experience with Snowflake or other cloud-based data platforms is preferred.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as required.
  • Must possess excellent analytical and communication skills.
  • Prompt and regular attendance at an assigned work location.

Education:
