Job Title: Crewperson 6 - P.M. Mechanical VFD Technician
Position Function: The Crewperson 6 - Mechanical Systems VFD Technician is responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, repair, programming, and operation of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and related electrical control systems throughout district facilities. This position supports the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of HVAC systems, pumps, motors, and other building equipment in a public school environment.
The VFD Technician works closely with maintenance staff, contractors, campus personnel, and vendors to minimize equipment downtime, maintain building comfort and safety, and improve energy efficiency throughout district facilities.
Essential Performance Responsibilities
Troubleshooting and Diagnostics
- Diagnose and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), HVAC controls, motors, pumps, and associated electrical systems.
- Analyze system alarms, fault codes, communication issues, and operating conditions to determine the root cause of equipment failures.
- Use diagnostic and testing equipment to evaluate system performance and identify deficiencies.
- Respond to service requests and emergency repair calls in a timely and professional manner.
- Make recommendations to the Supervisor regarding repairs, upgrades, and system improvements.
Preventative Maintenance
- Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on VFDs, motors, HVAC equipment, control panels, and related electrical systems.
- Inspect electrical connections, wiring, cooling fans, filters, and components for wear or failure.
- Maintain records and documentation necessary for efficient unit operation.
- Assist in maintaining energy-efficient operation of district mechanical systems.
Repair and Service
- Repair or replace defective VFD components, wiring, control devices, and related equipment.
- Test repaired systems to verify safe and proper operation.
- Coordinate repairs with district maintenance personnel, contractors, and vendors as needed.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and assigned vehicles in a clean and safe operating condition.
- Accept responsibility for all tools, supplies, materials, and district equipment assigned.
Installation and Commissioning
- Install VFDs, electrical controls, conduit, wiring, and associated equipment for district facilities.
- Configure and program VFD parameters for HVAC systems, pumps, and motors.
- Assist with startup, testing, and commissioning of new or upgraded equipment.

- Follow all district and OSHA safety procedures, including proper Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures when servicing or working on electrical and mechanical equipment.

- Maintain positive public relations while representing Wichita Public Schools and the Facilities Division.
- Attend required meetings, in-services, and training opportunities.
- Demonstrate willingness to learn new methods, procedures, and technologies related to the position.

- Perform additional duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Equipment:
The employee must demonstrate the ability to safely operate and maintain equipment associated with the position. This position may require the use of iPads, computers, copiers, scanners, and related office equipment.
The employee must comply with all district guidelines regarding equipment use and safety procedures.
Tools and equipment may include, but are not limited to:
- Electrical hand tools and power tools
- Digital multimeters and electrical testing equipment
- VFD diagnostic and programming tools
- Laptops or tablets used for drive configuration and monitoring
- Electrical meters and troubleshooting instruments
- Conduit and wiring installation tools
- Ladders and personnel lifts
- District vehicles and vans
Travel: Travel between schools, support facilities, and district offices is required.
Physical and Mental Demands:
- Ability to perform all assigned tasks and work required hours.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
- Ability to wear required safety equipment.
- Ability to work overtime on short notice when necessary.
- Ability to work in confined spaces, mechanical rooms, rooftops, and elevated areas.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical work including standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, lifting, and carrying equipment and materials.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment and materials up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work productively in stressful situations and adapt to changing schedules.
- Daily schedules may fluctuate to accommodate operational needs and emergency responses.
Exposure to dust, fumes, chemicals, refrigerants, oils, cleaning agents, compressed gases, and related maintenance materials may occur while performing job duties.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs), HVAC systems, motor controls, electrical systems, and Direct Digital Control (DDC) systems.
- Knowledge of electrical theory, control circuits, building automation systems, and DDC controls used in commercial and educational facilities.

Qualification Profile:

- Maintain a valid Kansas driver's license throughout employment.
