To thrive as a Lull Operator, you need a solid understanding of material handling, heavy equipment operation, and safe worksite practices, often supported by a high school diploma and relevant forklift or telehandler certifications. Familiarity with construction site protocols, telehandler controls, OSHA regulations, and equipment maintenance systems is typical. Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work well in a team setting are valuable soft skills. These qualities are critical to ensure efficient, safe, and coordinated materials movement on construction projects.
A typical day for a Lull Operator involves safely operating a telescopic forklift (commonly known as a Lull) to transport heavy materials, supplies, and equipment throughout various areas of a construction site. You may start by conducting pre-shift inspections of your equipment to ensure mechanical soundness, followed by collaborating with site supervisors and crew members to prioritize loads and deliveries. Throughout the day, you’ll be tasked with maneuvering materials around tight spaces, maintaining clear communication for site safety, and assisting with other site logistics as needed. This role often requires adaptability to shifting site conditions and close coordination with other trades and operators, making it dynamic and interactive.
