What is an LPN Ortho?

LPN Ortho nurses are Licensed Practical Nurses who specialize in orthopedic care, which focuses on patients with musculoskeletal issues such as fractures, joint replacements, and bone diseases. They assist in caring for patients before and after orthopedic surgeries, help with mobility and rehabilitation, administer medications, and support pain management. LPN Ortho nurses work closely with doctors, registered nurses, and physical therapists to ensure patients receive comprehensive orthopedic care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an LPN Ortho?

To thrive as an LPN Ortho, you need a solid foundation in practical nursing, orthopedic procedures, and patient assessment, typically achieved through an accredited LPN program and state licensure. Familiarity with electronic medical records (EMRs), orthopedic equipment, and basic wound care tools is commonly required. Excellent communication, attention to detail, and the ability to work well in fast-paced, team-oriented environments are crucial soft skills. These competencies ensure effective patient care, accurate documentation, and seamless collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals in orthopedic settings.

How does an LPN Ortho typically collaborate with physicians and physical therapists in patient care?

As an LPN working in orthopedics, you will regularly support physicians by gathering patient histories, preparing patients for exams, and assisting with minor procedures such as cast applications. Collaboration with physical therapists is also common, as you may help monitor patient progress, reinforce therapy instructions, and provide feedback on mobility or pain levels. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as you serve as a key point of contact for both patients and the broader healthcare team, ensuring coordinated and efficient care.
