What is an LPN?

An LPN, or Licensed Practical Nurse, is a healthcare professional who provides basic nursing care under the supervision of registered nurses and doctors. Their duties often include monitoring patients’ health, administering basic patient care, updating patient records, and assisting with daily living activities. LPNs work in various settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, and sometimes in home healthcare. They play a critical role in supporting patients and ensuring quality care in the healthcare system.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), you need a practical nursing diploma, LPN licensure, and strong skills in patient care, medication administration, and vital sign monitoring. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems and basic medical equipment is typically required. Compassion, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for providing quality patient care and collaborating with healthcare teams. These abilities ensure safe, efficient, and empathetic care delivery in a variety of clinical settings.

What are some common challenges LPNs face during their first few days on a new job, and how can they overcome them?

In the first few days, LPNs often encounter challenges such as adapting to new electronic health record systems, getting to know facility protocols, and building rapport with unfamiliar patients and colleagues. It's helpful to ask questions, take detailed notes, and seek mentorship from experienced staff. Proactively communicating and staying organized can ease the transition and set a positive tone for ongoing success in the role.
