Job Duties
Job Description:
Norfolk State University's Department of Facilities Management Transportation Division seeks applicants for the position of Part-time Long Distance Coach Driver.
Incumbent will report directly to the Transportation Manager, and can expect the following duties and responsibilities:
1. Ability to drive and comfortably operate 55 passenger buses, shuttles and passenger vans and all support and transit vehicles.
2. Ability to operate a transit vehicle.
3. Knowledge of DOT highway regulations; effective verbal and listening communications skills; time and stress management skills.
4. Ability to read and write in the English language to record and maintain daily route records.
5. Ability to understand, follow, and execute verbal instructions through two-way radio communications.
6. Ability to provide friendly customer service and conduct positive, courteous and respectful interaction with the public.
7. Operates transit vehicles on assigned routes maintaining established time schedules.
8. Performs pre-operation safety inspections; requests servicing and repairs verbally and in writing as necessary.
9. Maintains schedules and operates transit equipment in a safe and efficient manner. Maintains all required passenger and vehicle records.
10. Responds to inquiries and complaints from the public regarding services provided; assures that appropriate information is provided.
11. Assists elderly customers and persons with disabilities as required by the Americans with Disabilities Act, including the securement of mobility aids and physically evacuates passengers in any emergency situations.
12. Provides information to supervisor regarding route problems or traffic changes.
13. Provide detailed reports of accidents or incidents.
14. Practices safety at all times in performance of required duties.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Must be 21 years of age and have an acceptable motor vehicle driving record.
2. Must possess and maintain a Class "B" Commercial Driver's License with passenger and air brake endorsements
3. Must maintain an acceptable driving record level throughout employment as monitored by periodic reviews of driving record.
3. High school diploma or equivalent.
4. Demonstrated responsible work experience of at least one (1) year dealing directly with the public.
5. 3 years or more public transportation driving experience desirable
6. Must be able to work varying shifts, hours and days, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Additional Considerations
1. Must comply with the standards of the Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986, and as periodically amended.
2. Considerable customer service experience is highly preferred.
3. Or any combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job.
4. Individual may be required to attend school/workshops on a yearly basis to maintain skill level necessary to carry out position responsibilities.
