Job description

Job Summary

The Production Manager helps oversee daily operations to optimize mill output while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality. This role is responsible for completing work orders, processing purchase and sales orders, and conducting routine quality assurance checks on manufactured and inbound products. The Production Manager will also ensure all employees are in their assigned stations, working efficiently and safely.

Responsibilities
  • Receiving lumber – inspecting for quality and accuracy. Tagging incoming lumber into DMSI.
  • Communicate production schedule for each machine center and supply and track input tagged lumber to these machine centers. Ensuring quality and correct material are input.
  • Create and complete remans for daily production and ensure accuracy of finished inventory.
  • Monitor order file to match production to customer needs.
  • Maximize daily mill output by ensuring all machine centers run continuously, document and report any production downtime.
  • Ensure all employees are in their assigned workstations.
  • Assist with inventory counts and inventory organization.
  • Perform routine quality checks across all machine centers and inspect inbound materials to ensure product are correct and of good quality.
  • Complete end-of-day inspections to verify all machine stations are clean, safe, and properly shut down before employees leave.
  • Assist plant manager in ensuring all employees follow safety guidelines, wearing all required PPE, and monitor mill cleanliness and emergency readiness.
  • Facilitate regular safety meetings and fulfill OSHA training requirements.
  • Monitor employee performance, maintain accurate individual work records (including attendance and punctuality), and issue corrective action plans when necessary.
Required Skills & Abilities
  • Proven ability to manage, train, and motivate a diverse production team.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing workflows, process optimization, and waste reduction.
  • Understanding of data entry and inventory/timekeeping software (e.g., DMSI, Paycom).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to stay calm under pressure, handle workplace conflicts, and respond effectively.
  • Help resolve workplace conflicts objectively and manage the employee disciplinary process according to company policy.
  • Help schedule routine and preventive maintenance for machinery to maximize production.
Education & Experience
  • 3–5 years of supervisory or management experience in a mill, lumber, or heavy industrial manufacturing environment (preferred).
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; a degree in industrial management, business, or a related field is a plus.
  • OSHA certifications (e.g., OSHA 10-Hour or 30-Hour) are highly desirable.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, and navigate a busy mill environment for extended periods during an 8-to-12-hour shift.
  • Comfortable working in a loud, industrial environment exposed to temperature fluctuations, dust, and moving machinery.
  • Capability to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally, bend, stoop, and climb to inspect machinery.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
