General Description of Duties *****TO BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION YOU MUST CURRENTLY POSSESS A CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS CERTIFICATION IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA***** NOTE TO INTERNAL APPLICANTS: INTERNAL CANDIDATES IN THE SAME CLASSIFICATION AND/OR PAYGRADE AS THE POSITION POSTED WILL NOT RECEIVE A PAY ADJUSTMENT IF SELECTED. Under general direction, the purpose of the position is to assist in the organization and efficient operation of the Internal Affairs (IA) and Intelligence Unit (IU), which consists of certified and civilian staff members. Employees in this classification function at an entry management level.

Identifies and effectively manages any inmate and/or group of inmates that present an elevated security risk. Assists in developing, investigating, and disseminating information related to inmates involved in criminal street gangs and assists in conducting high priority investigation of alleged criminal acts or acts of serious misconduct by Corrections Department Employees. or other activity detrimental to the general welfare and safety of the Corrections staff, volunteers and inmates.

Work is performed with independence under general supervision of the Internal Affairs & Intelligence Section Lieutenant, and work performance is reviewed by examination of records, reports, and results achieved. Maintain confidentiality of sensitive Internal Affairs & Intelligence Section information. Supervise, train and evaluate staff and the daily functions and operations of the IA & IU.

Interview complainant(s), witnesses, and employees to gather evidence and facts related to alleged violations of Department and County Policy & Procedures, and present written findings in clear, concise and impartial reports. Overall supervision of the Inmate Drug Testing Program. Interview inmates to gather information related to assigned duties and prepare clear and concise written reports.

Provide training to certified and non-certified staff related to the functions of the IA & IU. Represent the Department at various law enforcement meetings and court proceedings. Reviews all submitted paperwork for proper format, accuracy, punctuation, thoroughness and completeness.

Maintains IA files in accordance with current policies, procedures and laws. Complete records requests for law enforcement agencies and State Attorney's Office. Prepares performance evaluations for subordinate staff.

Assess inmate drug testing intelligence and disseminate to Corrections and Law Enforcement personnel as needed. Participate in monthly section staff meetings. Reviews the daily report log monitoring inmate suspicious activities and/or patterns for investigative follow-up or suspicious drug testing.

Performs duties as assigned/necessary which are related, or logical in assignment to the position. Minimum Qualifications Education: Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or a related field is preferred. Experience: Five (5) years of experience in a Certified Corrections position to include two (2) years of experience as a Certified Corrections Sergeant.

Required Licenses/Certifications: Must possess and maintain current Florida State Corrections Certification, CPR and First Aid Certifications, and a valid Florida Driver's license. Miscellaneous: Osceola County one (1) year probationary period for certified staff must have been successfully completed. Must not have any discipline above a Written Reprimand in the last twelve (12) months.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Ability to effectively manage staff engaged in leading/supervising detention/correctional activities. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing. Thorough knowledge of correctional facility operations; skill in the use and operation of hand guns, and other hand held weapons; considerable knowledge of the signs and symptoms of substance abuse.

Thorough knowledge of adult inmate care, custody and control principles, practices, procedures and systems; knowledge of law enforcement principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. Thorough knowledge of pertinent federal, state and local rules, regulations, ordinances, and other regulatory standards applicable to the work. Skill in reading, analyzing and interpreting professional periodicals and journals, technical procedures, and legal documentation.

Capable to work under stressful conditions; ability to analytically observe, and objectively and clearly report routine and non-routine, emergency and non-emergency activities; skill in safe First Aid methods, procedures and practices. Skill in the principles and techniques of customer relations skills; ability to deal diplomatically with irate, violent or frantic individuals; ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations. Ability to work independently in an office and correctional environment; ability to prioritize work, organize and make sound judgments in inmate supervision; skill in analyzing and developing effective solutions; ability to investigate complaints.

Must be able to perform intermittent physically demanding work; must be able to sit, stand, walk or climb stairs for extended periods of time. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and communications with inmates, social service agencies, co-workers, department management, security and classification staff, members of the judiciary, and the general public. Must be able to work all shifts and overtime, as required.

Ability to operate basic office and communications equipment, e.g., radio; computer terminals, printers, copy machines, telephone systems, facsimile machines. Physical Demand Requirements Physical Demand: Very Heavy 100 pounds maximum lifting. Frequent (up to 2/3 of work time) lifting, carrying up to 50 pounds

If mostly sitting is involved will require push/pull on arm and leg controls. Expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken word or perceiving sound by ear. Good eye sight for production or safety of self and others.

Walk, run, stoop, bend and climb stairs. Must be able to walk, sit ,stand, or climb stairs for extended periods of time. Capable of working under stressful conditions.
