What is a Lockheed machinist?

A Lockheed machinist is a skilled tradesperson who operates various machine tools to manufacture precision parts and components used in aerospace products at Lockheed Martin. Their responsibilities include reading blueprints, setting up and maintaining machines, and ensuring all parts meet strict quality and safety standards. They often work with materials like aluminum, titanium, and composite alloys, producing components for aircraft, missiles, and other defense systems. Lockheed machinists play a crucial role in the production process, contributing to the safety and reliability of advanced aerospace technology.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a Lockheed machinist?

To thrive as a Lockheed Machinist, you need expertise in precision machining, blueprint reading, and quality control, usually supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with CNC machines, CAD/CAM software, and industry-standard measurement tools like calipers and micrometers is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and teamwork are crucial soft skills for ensuring accuracy and meeting production deadlines. These skills and qualifications are important for maintaining high manufacturing standards and supporting complex aerospace projects.

How does a Lockheed machinist collaborate with engineers and quality control teams during the manufacturing process?

Our spacecraft are designed to deliver payloads anywhere on Earth in under an hour, operating through extreme reentry conditions and landing with high precision. These systems open the door to new ways of testing, delivering, and operating at hypersonic speeds.
Inherently dual-use, our technology is built to meet urgent national security needs while laying the groundwork for future commercial applications. Backed by leading investors including Y Combinator, Spark Capital, and Lockheed Martin Ventures, and working with partners such as the U.S. Space Force and NASA, Inversion is pushing the boundaries of what's possible in space-based defense and logistics.
