A Brief Summary of This Position

The Welder A is a highly motivated and talented individual who demonstrates learning and growth in welding positions in our Irrigation Operations division. This position welds metal components together to construct products according to layouts, blueprints, or work orders.

Essential Functions

• Participate in two or more weeks of instructional and hands-on training in basic production welding skills including blueprint reading, shop safety, welding technique and weld quality
• Fuse or weld metal structural components together by means of arc welding in the fabrication of steel electrical poles, substations, and other structures
• Perform welding operations requiring a limited amount of planning of work from blueprints or other written specifications and determining operation sequence
• Utilize all safety devices and wear all mandatory personal protective safety equipment
• Adjust welding equipment to its prescribed settings
• Maintain and operate production tooling and fixtures as well all welding equipment in a safe and secure manner
• Read and complete labor reporting system, standard shop forms, and blueprints
• Performs minor welding machine maintenance (i.e. tips, liners, gas cups)
• Uses labor reporting system, routing shop forms, and fills out move tags
• Other duties as assigned

Other Important Details about the Role

• Candidates who satisfactorily complete the welder training program, including requirements for attendance, participation, and performance, will become eligible for a welding position
• Candidates who do not satisfactorily complete the welder training program due to unmet performance requirements may become eligible for further training or an opportunity to join the Valmont team in a non-welding position
• Candidates may also be asked to enroll in welding courses at a local community college, expenses paid, to further their training and development

Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)

• Ability to use tape measure
• Demonstrated commitment to learning how to weld in a production environment
• The ability to accurately read a measuring tape
• The ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions
• The ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a positive manner
• The ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment
• The ability to complete an on onsite welding assessment
• The ability to work over ten hours a week of overtime when required for business needs
• High awareness for safety at all times

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• One year of previous experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment American Welding Society (AWS) welding certification from a recognized school
• Six months of previous hands-on welding experience in a professional environment
• The ability to read and interpret blue prints correctly without assistance
• The ability to identify and communicate maintenance or product problems to departmental supervision
• Passion and integrity and the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results

Educational Background

Must be able to read and write. Requires the use of common shop mathematics. Must be proficient in the use and conversion of feet, inches, fractions, and decimals. Must be or become skilled in reading blueprints, utilizing manufacturing specifications, and the use of weld gauges. Must be able to manufacture product per shop drawings.

Job Training Skill Development

Decision Making

Operator must use considerable judgement to work safely and independently toward individual and department goals. Must be able to determine when weld quality falls below acceptability and take corrective action or report to Supervisor or Lead immediately. Must be able to determine when raw material is not to tolerance and report to the Supervisor or Lead immediately regarding the discrepancy.

EFFORT

The welding employee needs to be able lift & carry parts typically weighing less than 25 lbs., bend, reach and stand for extended periods of time. The incumbent needs to be able to handle and grasp items with one hand. There are times when an awkward position needs to be maintained in order to complete certain types of welds on larger items. This inside shop environment works at a very quick pace and the welder needs to have the physical strength and stamina to keep up with the speed of the rest of the welding team and the automated machinery. The welder needs to be able to sustain the weight of the required PPE during the entire shift as well as endure the excessive heat from the warm summer months and the high temperature given off from the burning equipment used.

Working Conditions

This job is performed in an indoor shop environment. The temperature range inside this area from 50 degrees in the winter to over 100 degrees in the summer. There is also excess heat exposure simply due to the content of the job. There is direct exposure to metal fumes, smoke and dust while operating equipment. Some outside work may be required during the various seasons. This is a noisy environment due to the grinding and drilling with sound levels above 85 decibels. Protective welding gear and metatarsal safety boots are required at all times in the work area. Fatigue may be due to heat, the weight of the protective gear and the fast pace in which the work needs to be completed. Employee may be exposed to certain chemical vapors when the metals become heated. The employee must be able to spend the entire shift in the shop environment.
