Job description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist the Lead Teacher with supervising, observing, and instructing children according to established curriculum and lesson plans.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, organized, and welcoming classroom environment.
  • Support the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and educational development of each child.
  • Complete classroom setup and clean-up duties as assigned, ensuring an attractive and developmentally appropriate environment.
  • Build and maintain positive relationships with children, families, and coworkers.
  • Observe children’s skills, interests, and developmental needs and communicate relevant information to the Lead Teacher.
  • Report significant observations regarding child development and classroom concerns to the Lead Teacher.
  • Provide active supervision to ensure the safety and well-being of children during all activities.
  • Offer comfort, guidance, and support to children using patience, compassion, and positive behavior techniques.
  • Assist children with personal care needs, including diapering, toileting, handwashing, and cleaning up accidents.
  • Follow all St. John Lutheran Home policies and procedures and comply with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including DHS Rule 3 requirements.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 16 years of age in accordance with DHS Rule 3.
  • Ability to work effectively with young children in a team-oriented environment.
  • Demonstrates dependability, patience, and strong communication skills.
  • Previous childcare experience is preferred but not required.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, climb, reach, push, pull, and carry throughout the workday.
  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally assist with lifting up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to hear and maintain near and distance vision, peripheral vision, color recognition, and depth perception.
  • Ability to work both indoors and outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to actively engage with children on the floor, playground, and during classroom activities.

Monday through Friday, daytime hours.
