What is a local dry van driver?

Local dry van drivers are professional truck drivers who transport goods using dry van trailers within a specific local or regional area, rather than long-haul routes. A dry van is an enclosed, box-shaped trailer designed to protect cargo from weather and theft. Local drivers typically return home daily, handling deliveries for businesses, warehouses, or retail locations within a set geographic area. Their responsibilities include loading and unloading freight, ensuring timely deliveries, and following safety protocols. This role is ideal for those seeking regular hours and daily home time compared to over-the-road trucking.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a local dry van driver, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Local Dry Van Truck Driver, you need a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL), a clean driving record, and knowledge of DOT regulations. Familiarity with electronic logging devices (ELDs), GPS navigation systems, and basic vehicle maintenance tools is typically required. Excellent time management, attention to detail, and strong communication skills set top drivers apart in this field. These skills and qualifications are crucial to ensure safety, compliance, on-time deliveries, and effective coordination with dispatchers and customers.

What are some common challenges faced by local dry van drivers, and how can they be managed?

Local dry van drivers often encounter challenges such as navigating urban traffic, meeting tight delivery schedules, and dealing with frequent loading and unloading. Effective time management and strong communication with dispatchers can help drivers stay on track and reduce stress. Additionally, building familiarity with local routes and maintaining good relationships with warehouse staff can make daily operations smoother and more efficient.

What is the difference between Local Dry Van vs Local Reefer?

Job description

We are actively hiring experienced Class A CDL Solo OTR Truck Drivers for our modern fleet who live in the Green Bay, WI area and surrounding communities. Green Bay has become one of our key markets in the Upper Midwest thanks to its consistent freight volume and strong demand for reliable transportation services. Our routes often begin or conclude in this region, giving local drivers reliable home time on nationwide runs doing over the road services.
Typical Pay Highlights:
  • 30% of line haul OR 65 per mile + bonuses (the choice most solo drivers prefer).
  • Average weekly gross: $1,900 – $2,400 with peaks reaching $2,700+ on legal hours.
  • Switch between percentage and miles pay whenever you choose.
  • Consistent drivers earned between $115,000 and $125,000 in 2025.
  • Anyone who wants to put in the effort will make good money!

Pay Details & Realistic Expectations:
Pay is performance-based. In 2025, 87% of our drivers went with the 30% percentage plan because it consistently delivered better earnings in the current market. Slow season (Q1) typically ranges from $1,900–$2,100 per week with some weeks hitting $2,400. Peak seasons (Q2 and Q4) usually run $2,100–$2,400 with some $2,700 weeks. Q3 is somewhere between. This seasonal pattern has been reliable for the past 25 years. A few exceptional top performers reached $145,000 last year driving full time.

Pay Options:
  • Percentage Pay (Best Option for Most Solos) - We pay up to 30% of line haul plus bonuses. We intentionally keep miles lower on percentage (2,000–2,500 in slow season and up to 3,000 in busy season) because it maximizes earnings, reduces fuel costs, and helps prevent burnout.
  • Miles Pay Option - Switch at any time. Up to 65 cents per mile plus bonuses based on experience and record. Typical miles: 2,500–3,600 per week.
  • Team Pay (Miles Only) - Up to 75¢ per mile split. Average $2,000–$2,600 per driver per week. Note: Solo percentage pay is currently the stronger choice in this market.
