Job description

Identify, remove, pack, transport, or dispose of hazardous materials, including asbestos. Specialized training and certification in hazardous materials handling or a confined entry permit are generally required.

Reports to and receives assignments, instructions, and direction from the Foreman or General Foreman. Removes and/or replaces asbestos insulation on plant operating equipment, pipelines, storage vessels, and tanks in support of plant construction and maintenance activities. Follows all hazardous waste handling guidelines. Provides leadership, instruction, and guidance to lower level craftsmen and may reassign work delegated from supervisor. Completes records, maintains tools and equipment, and performs various clean-up and housekeeping activities. Observes and follows all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment. Performs other duties and activities as directed.

RESPONSIBILITIES

- Follow prescribed safety procedures, and comply with federal laws regulating waste disposal methods.

- Record numbers of containers stored at disposal sites, and specify amounts and types of equipment and waste disposed.

- Operate machines and equipment to remove, package, store, or transport loads of waste materials.

- Load and unload materials into containers and onto trucks, using hoists or forklifts.

- Clean contaminated equipment or areas for re-use, using detergents and solvents, sandblasters, filter pumps, and steam cleaners.

- Construct scaffolding or build containment areas prior to beginning abatement or decontamination work.

- Remove asbestos and/or lead from surfaces, using hand and power tools such as scrapers, vacuums, and high-pressure sprayers.

Journeyman - Typically 3 years and above documented field experience in chosen craft discipline with ability to read and interpret instructions and document, plan and perform work activities independently.

Works under immediate supervision. Primary job functions do not typically require exercising independent judgment. Typically reports to a supervisor or manager.
