Dates of Seasonal Employment

The position will run from:

Hours are 8am-4:30pm Monday through Friday. Feeding on the weekends, usually 8 am and 3:30pm. Summer starts 4/27 till 8/16/2026.


Skills/Training or Other Specific Requirements
Must be able to work around large energetic horses, must be able to tolerate barn smells, dust, heavy lifting (50-60 lbs.), must be able to take orders and carry out assigned tasks. Experience with basic farm equipment is a plus. Experience with horses is required. Must be able to receive instruction and carry out assigned tasks and be available to work Saturday and Sunday as needed. The candidate must be 16 years of age or older.

Responsibilities
Clean stalls, feed horses, water horses, clean water buckets, clean feed tubs, make small stall repairs, remove cobwebs from facility, sweep aisles, organize tools, pull weeds, pick up trash, clean wash rack, clean drains in wash racks, dump manure tubs in wash racks and farrier areas, hold horses for farrier, hold horses for veterinarians, unload hay, rake outside areas, tear down jump standards and rails, drive tractor and spreader, load and spread manure on fields, replace light bulbs, clean gutters and downspouts, assist with landscaping, operate weed eater, operate lawnmower, assist with snow removal, repair fences, repair stalls, water arenas, level arenas, painting, trim trees and shrubs, mulch beds, treat pond, clean horse trailer and school truck, load show supplies, turnout horses, move tack boxes, perform general housekeeping, strip floors, and move furniture.


May be asked to secure all offices, tack-rooms, and stalls. Perform hourly rounds to evaluate the condition of each horse on the facility and correct problems that may arise. Also, the student will provide information to guests and enforce the farm operating hours. Lock offices, shut off lights, check horses, secure stall doors, secure barn doors based on weather conditions, check water system for problems, dust mop lobby floor, pick up trash, perform stall counts, assist veterinarians with clinic cases, patrol perimeter of facility, place miscellaneous tools in appropriate areas, prepare a report on all farm activities during the shift, check horses in, check horses out, check heating conditions in the office areas, collect and note tack left lying around. Perform all other duties deemed appropriate for this position.

Career Management: Student General Farm Laborer will gain valuable hands-on experience to help further their abilities both in and out of the saddle. Digital Technology: Student General Farm Laborer has the ability to learn about and watch state of the art technology used by vet staff here at the University Farm. They will have a chance to watch newly emerging treatments and ask questions about advanced technology throughout the year.
