The Archive Intern will assist the Archivist in collecting, preserving, and sharing the history of Montgomery County. This includes the care and management of permanent county records as well as manuscript collections that contain a variety of materials. The aim of this program is to provide interns with a well-rounded archival experience along with hands-on experience of archival processing and description. Special emphasis will be placed on processing and managing digital collections. Specific projects will be determined at the beginning of the internship program.
WORK ENVIRONMENT, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS/ACTIVITIES:
Typical office environment. Extended periods of time sitting, standing, typing on a computer is required.
Ability to lift boxes up to 40 lbs.
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 40 pounds of force; work regularly requires sitting, frequently requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions and occasionally requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling and reaching with hands and arms.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus. Will spend a large amount of time viewing a computer screen.
Vocal communication and normal hearing are required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.
Work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data and observing general surroundings and activities.
Work is primarily in an office setting.
Ability to recognize occupational hazards in work activities and take safety precautions.

GENERAL POSITION DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The following duties are normal for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.
Interns will benefit from exposure to a wide variety of archival tasks. Projects may include, but are not necessarily limited to:
Enhancement of archival/collections metadata using ArchivesSpace and other programs as needed.
Processing, rehousing, and digitization of physical assets.
Authoring articles for the Montgomery County Archives Facebook page and other venues.
Participate in planning and implementing exhibit plans.
Supporting the archival staff with day-to-day activities, such as helping patrons with research requests, indexing materials, and cleaning records.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Enrollment in a Bachelor's or Graduate degree program, preferably within the History department.
Strong attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Knowledge and experience with Facebook other social media platforms.
