What does it mean to live rent free in exchange for work?

Living rent free in exchange for work means that a person is provided with free accommodation in return for performing certain tasks or services for the property owner or landlord. This arrangement can include duties such as property maintenance, cleaning, childcare, pet sitting, or assisting with household chores. The exact responsibilities and hours required vary depending on the agreement between the parties. Generally, affordable housing options for around $500 a month are more common in rural areas or smaller towns, where the cost of living is lower, but such arrangements are typically separate from employment offers. Researching local job boards and community programs can help identify opportunities that include housing benefits or affordable rent options.

What are common expectations and challenges when living rent-free in exchange for work?

When living rent-free in exchange for work, you can typically expect to perform regular duties such as maintenance, cleaning, childcare, or property management, depending on the arrangement. One of the main challenges is balancing your personal time with the required work hours, as the boundaries between 'work' and 'home' can blur. Familiarity with tools for minor repairs, home security systems, and sometimes pet or garden care is helpful. Offering to work for free, often called unpaid work or volunteering, is common in internships or apprenticeships but is generally not permitted for paid employment unless explicitly agreed upon. Job description

Steve Brown Apartments, a leader in Madison's rental market since 1980, is looking for skilled team players who want to join our maintenance team. Join our team now and receive a $1500 sign-on bonus!
What You'll Do.
In addition to focusing on fixing items in occupied apartments, you'll also spend a good portion of your day on property upkeep and preventative maintenance: You'll handle a wide variety of household repairs, prepare apartments for new residents, run through daily checklists, handle surprises, and more. No two days will be the same! You'll also be on our emergency on-call rotation fixing after-hours and weekend emergencies.
What It Takes.
People who do best in this role are quick learners who take pride in their work, can work solo or in teams, and like variety and moving around. You'll need patience, respect for our residents' belongings and privacy, and a desire to provide excellent customer service. Previous experience working in the trades, or a facilities role is beneficial, as is any specialized expertise. A high school or equivalent diploma, valid driver's license and reliable transportation (mileage reimbursed) are required.
What You Get in Exchange.
This is an hourly paid position, including potential annual profit sharing. You'll also benefit from our training and social events, recognition programs, complete medical and dental plans, supplemental insurance, rental discount, paid time off, a company-matched 401k plan, and continuing education reimbursement. You'll have a stable schedule, year-round employment, use of our shared-company vehicles, and work with a great team where collaboration and safety are emphasized.
When and Where We'll See You.
We have four department locations - one in Madison West/Middleton and three in the campus area: Lucky, Regent/Suburbs, and Downtown. Our maintenance technicians have a "home location" but often move around throughout the year. As a full-time employee, you'll work Monday-Friday or Sunday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with an on-call rotation.
We're Unexpectedly Kind and Unapologetically Driven.
As a locally owned, privately managed company, Steve Brown Apartments is dedicated to improving and supporting the community we call home. We're champions for innovation, professionalism, and growth.
Our commitment to quality and service and our unwavering focus on providing our residents with a hassle-free living experience have made us one of Madison's favorite rental companies and a four-time winner of Madison Magazine's Best Places to Work. If you're looking for a company where hard work is tempered by play, you get to be the hero for our residents every day, and no two days are alike; apply now!
Our Application Process.
Applications are required. All potential candidates start with a 15-minute phone call, and those we'd like to meet are invited to interview on-site or virtually if you're not local. We typically interview each candidate at least two, sometimes four times before making an offer. We hire for the long term, not for the moment, and take the time to get it right.
Steve Brown Apartments is delighted to provide a sign-on & retention bonus for full-time maintenance technicians during this time. The bonus will be paid in two installments at 3 months and 6 months of employment. More details about the bonus will be shared at the time of employment offer.
