Live In Underwater Robotics information

What are Live In Underwater Robotics?

Live In Underwater Robotics professionals are experts who operate, maintain, and monitor robotic systems that function underwater, often for extended periods. These specialists typically live on-site, such as on research vessels or underwater habitats, to provide immediate support for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) used in research, exploration, or industrial tasks. Their work involves troubleshooting, repairs, and data collection in challenging underwater environments. This role is crucial in fields like marine biology, offshore energy, and underwater archaeology.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in live-in underwater robotics roles?

Professionals in live-in underwater robotics roles often encounter unique challenges, including adapting to remote or confined living environments for extended periods and maintaining effective communication with team members both on and offshore. Additionally, they must manage complex underwater equipment in harsh conditions, troubleshoot unexpected technical issues, and prioritize safety at all times. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams—including engineers, marine biologists, and operators—is essential to ensure smooth operations and the successful deployment of robotic systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Live-In Underwater Robotics Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live-In Underwater Robotics Technician, you generally need expertise in robotics, mechanical or electrical engineering, and underwater systems, often supported by a relevant degree or technical certification. Familiarity with remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), sonar systems, underwater communication tools, and certifications like ROV pilot/technician credentials are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, adaptability, and effective teamwork are essential soft skills for this role. These skills and qualities are crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of underwater robotics in challenging and isolated environments.

What is the difference between Live In Underwater Robotics vs Underwater Robotics Technician?

AspectLive In Underwater RoboticsUnderwater Robotics Technician
CredentialsRelevant engineering or technical certifications, specialized trainingTechnical certifications, hands-on training in robotics maintenance
Work EnvironmentExtended periods underwater, often in remote or confined spacesOnshore or vessel-based, working with underwater equipment
Industry UsageUsed in research stations, offshore exploration, and underwater installationsMaintains and repairs underwater robots, supports operations

Live In Underwater Robotics involves working in submerged environments for extended periods, often requiring specialized certifications and training. In contrast, Underwater Robotics Technicians typically work onshore or on vessels, focusing on maintaining and repairing underwater robots. Both roles are essential in underwater exploration and industry, but they differ mainly in work environment and responsibilities.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Enhance or augment embedded software for autonomous vehicles (UGV, UAV, UUV, USV) to extend baseline capabilities
  • Implement sensor fusion for autonomous navigation (LIDAR, cameras, IMU, sonar)
  • Design control systems for robotic platforms and actuators
  • Create hardware abstraction layers following MOSA/SOSA standards
  • Develop digital twin simulations for hardware-in-the-loop testing
  • Implement real-time operating systems (RTOS) and safety-critical software
  • Develop and verify safety-critical software in accordance with established standards and best practices
  • Design and fabricate custom hardware solutions using 3D printing and rapid prototyping
  • Apply Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) practices using SysML/AADL
Secondary Responsibilities
  • Lead field testing and validation of autonomous systems
  • Support deployment and troubleshooting in operational environments
  • Create hardware test fixtures and validation procedures
  • Document MOSA compliance and interface specifications
  • Train operators on system capabilities and limitations

Experience:

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years embedded systems and/or robotics development experience
  • Strong proficiency in C and C++ for real-time for resource-constrained systems
  • Expert proficiency and practical knowledge of Python for scripting, tooling, and rapid prototyping
  • Experience with ROS/ROS2 for robotics development
  • Hands-on experience with autonomous vehicle platforms
  • Proficiency with CAD tools and 3D printing/fabrication
