SUMMARY
JOB DESCRIPTION
This is a para-professional position responsible for providing interpretation for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, and staff in a variety of settings, including classrooms, university activities, and when needed. Responsible for providing interpreting at all levels and for all aspects of university functions. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Director of Disability Services.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor's degree in human services, rehabilitation, or a related field is preferred.
One year of related experience is required. Experience in higher education is preferred. National certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or qualifications through Texas and Human Services at the BEI Basic level or an equivalent is required.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Provides interpreting for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, faculty, and staff in a variety of settings, including classrooms, university activities, and when needed.
2. Evaluates communication needs of deaf and hard-of hearing consumers and provides communication access based on that evaluation
3. Assists in providing captioning as needed.
4. Follows policies and regulations regarding interpreting procedures and code of conduct.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
2. Knowledge of professional standards and regulations in the areas of sign language and interpreting.
3. Knowledge of deafness and deaf culture.
4. Knowledge of signing and a clear understanding when signed to (sign-to-voice).
5. Organizational skills in managing projects simultaneously while maintaining a satisfactory work product.
6. Ability to maintain effective interpersonal relationships.
7. Ability to communicate effectively through sign language and in both oral and written English.
8. Ability to problem-solve a variety of situations.
9. Ability to provide support to student development with a demonstrable concern for deaf and hard-of-hearing students.
10. Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends as necessary.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANT
