Primary Purpose
The Community Assistant (CA) is live-in required, student staff position with Housing and Residence Life. Responsible for assisting in the implementation of a residential experience/community development model.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide peer leadership, serve as a role model, and maintain positive peer-leader relationships for the resident community. Use good judgment and be consistent and considerate in all relationships with residents.
  • Facilitate community development among roommates, suitemates, and floor members through effective availability, accessibility, interaction, outreach, and programming.
  • Engage in intentional conversations with resident students, identify any social and academic needs, and respond to them in a variety of means such as activities, programs, and individual/group interactions.
  • Report and document any violations within a timely manner, including the completion of an incident report.
  • Maintain confidentiality for residents, guests and staff.
  • Respond to, document, and report inappropriate or concerning behavior from resident students, staff, and guests according to established procedures and protocols.
  • Communicate with the Residence Life Coordinator according to established procedures and protocols to address any situations regarding any issue that is a resident welfare concern, residents who may be emotionally or physically at risk, or problems or situations that may require prolonged or professional attention (i.e. roommate conflicts, unusual absence, depression, other unusual behavior, etc.).
  • Be familiar with and effectively implement Housing Emergency Procedures, demonstrating calm leadership in an emergency should one arise.
  • Serve as a resource and act as a referral agent for resident students, parents, prospective students, and guests.
  • Maintains visibility and connection with residents by regularly coordinating and attending programs, visiting with residents in the community, maintaining a presence in the campus dining facility, and by being available to address resident questions/concerns. Any work or activity that will take the employee away from the residence hall for extended periods of time must be approved by the supervisor.
  • Participate in a duty rotation which will include coverage over college holidays.
  • Serve on day and night duty and building round rotations. Follow appropriate policy adherence when assisting residents.
  • Work closely with custodial and maintenance personnel to help accomplish their goals as efficiently as possible.
  • Attend and actively participate in all scheduled time commitments.
  • Perform other duties as they pertain to the overall objective of the position, as assigned.
  • Provide, plan and execute events in the Residence Hall following the guidelines established by the RLC.

PAY AND TIME COMMITMENT
This position will compensate in two ways:
  • On-campus housing accommodations (furnished bedroom) from Tuesday, September 1st, 2026 - Monday, June 14th, 2027. Generally, this will cover Community related tasks. Note - Due to availability, a specific room type cannot be guaranteed. Current residents should expect to move rooms.
  • This also includes a Basic Meal Plan each term. (9 meals/week + $400 Flex Cash per term)
  • Stipend of $300 per term, given out as $100/month (roughly)
  • Attend weekly and/or bi-weekly staff meetings.
  • Subject to 24-hour on-call status, performing all aspects of position responsibilities while in the residence hall and on campus, on or off duty, day or night.
  • Commitment and flexibility are key for this position. Approval is required for a second job and/or extra, time consuming commitments.

  • Group Process - As part of the interview process for the Community Assistant position, you will take part in a group process interacting with fellow CA Applicants in a small social mixer. In the role of Community Assistant, being able to interact with multiple people who you may not know well or have experience with is a large portion of the job. This mixer will allow you a glimpse into what day to day interactions may be like while also getting to know potential future co-workers.
  • Shadow A Current CA - The role of Community Assistant is unlike any role that most people have held. To ensure that folks have the best understanding of the position they are getting into, once offered a CA Position, hired candidates will be asked to shadow current CAs for one evening during Spring 2026. This will give candidates the opportunity to see what it is like to be a CA while on duty, ask current CAs what the position is like, and get a better understanding of what goes into hosting small events.

Ergonomic Requirements
Often work is performed at night and after regular working hours. Computer screens are used 25 percent of the time. Community Assistants must be able to do rounds through the building, walking the hallways and stairwells, and respond late at night while on duty. Extended standing with occasional lifting between 10-25 lbs. The employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms and requires near visual acuity to write, read written materials and computer screens, and sufficient hearing and speech ability for ordinary telephonic conversations. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation

  • At least one academic quarter of previous residential/communal living experience or the equivalent (i.e. residence hall, military barracks, etc.)
  • Successful completion of at least 12 credits at an accredited community college or university.
  • At the time of application, be enrolled in 12 credits at COCC, and must maintain Full Time student status (12 credits/term) throughout employment.
  • At the time of application, possess a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50, and must maintain a term and cumulative GPA of 2.50 throughout employment.
  • Must not have any major Residential or Academic conduct violations
