The City of Wheaton is currently searching for dependable and community-oriented individuals to represent our city as Seasonal Crossing Guards during the academic school year. This position interacts with residents and community members daily and is responsible for ensuring the safety of students commuting to and from school during the educational school year, during the morning and afternoon hours. Summers, weekends, and holidays off!
Essential Job Functions:
Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Ability to maintain control of children at crossing sites; ensure children cross safely and at designated sites.
- Effectively evaluate traffic and make decisions regarding stopping vehicles with the least effect on traffic flow.
- Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals and report infractions to the police department.
- Escort children across the street.
- Communicate essential information with school personnel.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality are required.
Qualifications:
A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with any combination of experience and education that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Basic Requirements:
- Knowledge of basic traffic regulations and safety precautions
- Clear and effective communication skills with children and adults, both oral and written
- Ability to work in all types of weather
- Ability to clearly see, hear, and observe oncoming vehicles at the crossing site, from both near and far distances
- Ability to perform light physical activity with moderate noise levels
- Physical ability to sit, stand, walk, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and reach with arms and hands
- Possess manual dexterity and fine motor skills sufficient to perform all essential job functions and basic requirements listed above
Salary: $39.47 per hour.
