Job description

Summary Under the direction of the Fire Chief and department command staff, the position of Paid-On-Call Firefighter protects life and property by responding to fires, medical emergencies, vehicle crashes and extrications, hazardous materials incidents, ice and water rescues, auto extrication, and other emergency situations. The position performs firefighting, rescue, emergency medical, prevention, and public education activities while supporting the mission and operational readiness of the department. Essential Duties Performs firefighting activities including fire attack, fire suppression, containment, salvage, overhaul, driving fire apparatus, operating pumps, laying hose, and related firefighting equipment.

Performs emergency medical aid activities within the scope of certification, including patient assessment, CPR, administering of first aid, automated external defibrillator (AED) use, and other approved emergency medical services. Participates in fire department trainings, drills, and classes for firefighting, emergency medical response, hazardous materials awareness and operations, vehicle extrication, ice and water rescue, and other related subjects. Provides First Responder emergency medical services.

Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment to ensure operational readiness. Assists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, communications, training programs, firefighting, hazardous materials, and emergency aid activities.

Participates in fire prevention, and public education by presenting programs to the community on fire safety, emergency preparedness, and injury/fire prevention topics. Performs salvage operations such as deploying salvage cover protecting personal property, removing water and debris. Maintains regular attendance at emergency calls, scheduled training sessions, meetings, and other department activities in accordance with departmental policies and requirements.

Qualifications High school graduate or equivalent 18 years of age or older Valid Minnesota driver's license Live within 6 minutes from either Station 1 (1408 Lake Street S, Forest Lake) or from Station 2(16319 Kettle River Blvd, Columbus) Pass police background check No DWI related convictions within the last 5 years No felony convictions on record Pass firefighter physical fitness test Pass psychological test provided by the Fire Department Pass medical exam provided by the Fire Department Must be available every Tuesday night (7 p.m.- 10 p.m.) for department training Working Environment Paid On-Call Firefighters work in a dynamic, unpredictable, and physically demanding environment that requires responding to emergencies at all hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during severe weather conditions. Firefighters are expected to respond within established response time requirements. The work involves responding to a wide variety of emergency incidents, including structure fires, vehicle fires, hazardous materials incidents, medical emergencies, motor vehicle crashes, rescue operations, severe weather events, and other situations involving risks to life and property

Firefighters frequently work under stressful and rapidly changing conditions where sound judgment, teamwork, and effective communication are essential. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Requires the ability to perform essential job functions while wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE), including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), in environments that may involve extreme heat, limited visibility, rapidly changing conditions, and hazardous atmospheres. Must be capable of performing strenuous physical activities such as climbing ladders, advancing hose lines, operating tools, dragging or carrying equipment, and assisting in victim rescue operations.

Requires the ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects and equipment weighing up to 100 pounds, and to perform tasks requiring balance, coordination, flexibility, and muscular endurance. Requires the ability to perform essential job functions while wearing full personal protective equipment (PPE), including self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), in environments that may involve extreme heat, limited visibility, rapidly changing conditions, and hazardous atmospheres. Requires adequate cardiovascular fitness to perform extended activities under physically demanding and stressful conditions, including functioning in high temperatures and wearing heavy protective gear.

Must possess sufficient vision, with or without corrective lenses, to read gauges, observe hazards, evaluate scenes, and perform critical tasks; includes depth perception, peripheral vision, and color differentiation. Requires adequate hearing acuity to detect alarms, radio communications, verbal instructions, and environmental hazards amid high noise levels. Must be able to communicate effectively under stress, including issuing clear, concise verbal commands during emergency operations.

Requires the ability to work in confined spaces, at heights, in dark environments, and in close proximity to fire, smoke, electrical hazards, chemicals, and other dangerous conditions. Must tolerate physical and mental stressors inherent to emergency response, including exposure to traumatic incidents, long-duration operations, fatigue, and irregular sleep cycles. Requires the ability to safely operate vehicles, equipment, and communication devices under both routine and emergency conditions.

Must be able to perform emergency responses, including running short distances, kneeling, crawling, and navigating uneven or unstable surfaces.
