Job description

About the position
Deckhands are primarily responsible for the safety of fellow crew members, the vessel, the cargo, and the environment. They perform tasks associated with building and breaking tow, as well as vessel cleanliness and maintenance. Tasks are carried out in all weather conditions, both outside and within the confines of the vessel, while navigating the western rivers.

Responsibilities

  • Deckhands are primarily responsible for the safety of fellow crew members, the vessel, the cargo, and the environment
  • They perform tasks associated with building and breaking tow, as well as vessel cleanliness and maintenance
  • Tasks are carried out in all weather conditions, both outside and within the confines of the vessel, while navigating the western rivers
  • Build and break tow effectively
  • Inspect, correct, and/or notify others of any conditions that affect the safety of individuals or cargo
  • Handle rigging during tow building, locking, and landing work, ensuring the proper fitting of cables, wires, and lines, and use appropriate tools for adjustments as needed
  • Safely secure barges with cables, wires, and lines while being environmentally conscious
  • Perform basic vessel maintenance, including painting, cleaning, and basic engine room maintenance
  • Communicate clearly on a VHF radio; understand and implement instructions provided by the vessel Captain
  • Effectively use all safety equipment as required by company policies
  • Responsible for maintaining personal hygiene; ensuring the cleanliness and safety of own bunkroom and collaborating with the crew to uphold similar standards in public spaces
  • Perform assigned firefighting, man overboard and abandon ship duties as assigned on the Station Bill


Requirements
• Strictly follow all HFL policies, as well as adhere to USCG and federal regulations.
• Must possess or ability to possess Transportation Worker's Identification Card (TWIC)
• Pass pre-employment drug test and submit to random DOT testing requirements.
• Pass pre-employment physical and background

Nice-to-haves

• Prior experience in a similar position within the marine transportation industry
• Prior experience in a safety-sensitive or manual labor position
