Job description

Job Description:

The Boston Globe is hiring a transportation reporter to cover our public transit system, Boston’s infamous traffic, our aging infrastructure, and our robust pedestrian and bike culture. The beat centers accountability reporting on state agencies and public officials, with plenty of breaking news and scoops to be had. But it also includes enterprising stories about how we live, as how we get around consumes much of our day-to-day life here. We want someone who is comfortable with public records requests and who can elevate an item from a dry hearing into a lively, thoroughly reported story that resonates with our readers. We are looking for a relentless and curious reporter with wide-ranging interests who thrives on holding public officials accountable. Additionally, we want someone who can both generate story ideas and take assignments, turning them around swiftly when necessary.

Responsibilities:

The ideal candidate is a versatile reporter with a high news metabolism, someone who can write with depth, creativity, and flair. A few other qualities that would make you a good fit for this position:

  • You’re creative and enterprising. You see fresh angles to storylines everywhere.
  • You’re a master at cultivating sources.
  • You thrive on holding public officials accountable.
  • You can write quickly and nimbly on deadline for the web and for print.
  • You’re a collaborative reporter who likes being part of a team.

Qualifications:

  • At least 3-5 years experience as a journalist at a major market or publication.
  • Ability to write clean, compelling copy on deadline.
  • A skilled writer who can elevate good stories into great ones.
  • Adaptable and enterprising.
  • Skillful and creative with public records requests.
  • A team player who thrives in a group setting.
  • A willingness to adapt and be audience focused, with a curious mindset and a commitment to creating an inclusive work environment

The BGMP office is located in downtown Boston, near Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market, and is easily accessible by MBTA and commuter rail lines. This position is based in Boston, and candidates should be based in the area or willing to move.

The hourly rate for this role is $38.41 - $61.53.

This range reflects the band for this role. We are committed to fair and market-informed compensation. It is anticipated that most qualified candidates could be hired within the midpoint of the range. Compensation for the successful candidate will be informed by their particular combination of skills, experience, and qualifications.

This position is a union position covered by a collective bargaining agreement with the Boston Newspaper Guild.

It is unlawful in Massachusetts to require or administer a lie detector test as a condition of employment or continued employment. An employer who violates this law shall be subject to criminal penalties and civil liability.

EEO Statement: At Boston Globe Media, our mission is to empower, connect, and convene our communities with independent, trusted journalism and storytelling. We know a critical part of achieving this is by having a workforce that is representative of the communities we serve.
