Mainframe Dev & Deployment Tools Engineer
 
The Role:
We are seeking a skilled Mainframe Dev & Deployment Tools Engineer to design, implement, and support development toolchains and deployment frameworks for IBM z/OS environments. This role focuses on enabling DevOps practices, automating build and deployment pipelines, and ensuring smooth application promotion across development, test, and production environments.
 
* This role requires employees to live in or around the Phoenix, AZ area. You will be responsible to be onsite 3 days a week. We will consider candidates who are willing to relocate to the area.
Key Responsibilities:
Development Toolchain & DevOps Enablement
  • Design and maintain mainframe development toolchains supporting:
    • COBOL, PL/I, JCL, and related technologies
  • Enable and support:
    • Source control integration
    • Versioning strategies
    • Artifact management
  • Promote adoption of DevOps practices for mainframe development
Build & Deployment Automation
  • Develop and maintain automated build and deployment processes
  • Implement tools and pipelines for:
    • Code compilation
    • Packaging
    • Promotion across environments
  • Automate release management processes to:
    • Reduce manual effort
    • Increase reliability and consistency
Deployment Frameworks & Tools Support
  • Administer and support enterprise deployment tools such as:
    • Endevor
    • ChangeMan
    • ISPW
  • Manage:
    • Package lifecycle (build, test, deploy, rollback)
    • Promotion paths across DEV โ†’ QA โ†’ UAT โ†’ PROD
Environment Management
  • Manage and support:
    • Development, test, and production environments
  • Ensure consistency and integrity across environments
  • Coordinate deployments with:
    • Application teams
    • QA
    • Operations
Automation & Integration
  • Develop automation using:
    • REXX, CLIST, JCL, scripting tools
  • Integrate mainframe toolchains with:
    • Enterprise CI/CD pipelines
    • Distributed DevOps tools (Git, Jenkins, etc. โ€“ when applicable)
Required Qualifications:
  • 5โ€“10+ years of mainframe experience
  • 3โ€“5+ years in Dev & Deployment / SCM / Release Engineering
  • Strong experience with:
    • IBM z/OS environment
  • Hands-on experience with:
    • Endevor / ChangeMan / ISPW
  • Solid understanding of:
    • Mainframe SDLC processes
    • Build and release management
  • Experience with:
    • JCL, TSO/ISPF, SDSF
    • Source control and promotion processes
  • Knowledge of:
    • DevOps concepts applied to mainframe
  • Ability to build custom application written in assembler
  • Very strong Cobol, Assembler and REXX knowledge and experience
Preferred Experience:
  • Familiarity with:
    • DB2, IMS, CICS integration in deployments
  • Experience with:
    • CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, Git integration)
    • Automation frameworks (REXX, Python)
  • Exposure to:
    • Mainframe modernization initiatives
  • Experience with:
    • Enterprise-scale DevOps transformations
    • Automation of build/release pipelines
