Location:

Washington, DC

Senior Writer, Politics

WIRED seeks an experienced journalist to cover national politics, particularly how Silicon Valley money is influencing electoral campaigns, government policies, regulations, and enforcement, local and federal legislation, and everything in between.

In this role, you'll be responsible for consistently breaking high-impact news. We're less interested in horse race drama than we are in the people making consequential decisions, whether in the White House, among local and national Democrats and Republicans, or at crypto or prediction market firms. To succeed in this role, you should have investigative reporting experience, be comfortable working with data and FEC filings, and be well-sourced at the intersection of Silicon Valley and DC.

You should have a proven ability to deliver scoops, exclusives, and stories that can't be found anywhere else. We're interested in hard news and the ability to put new information into a broader context. We want to know not only who the key players are, but what logic guides their actions, and who is most affected by them.

In addition to breaking news, you'll be expected to contribute to WIRED in other ways. That includes collaborating with journalists on other desks, and pitching and writing long-form features on your beat. You should also be prepared to engage in a wide range of storytelling formats, such as social, podcasts, video series, and live events.

This senior writer will report to WIRED's director of politics and science and will be part of a growing and increasingly global newsroom of smart, kind, collaborative, and well-informed colleagues who are always brimming with ideas and eager to help each other out.

This is a guild position.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Break high-impact news and deliver scoops on a regular basis

  • Report and write at least six stories per month, balancing quick exclusives and longer, differentiated work

  • Collaborate with other members of your desk, and journalists from across the WIRED newsroom

  • Collaborate with audio, video, events, and social media teams as needed to develop ways of telling stories on other platforms

  • Work collaboratively with global markets on all relevant stories or packages

  • Additional projects/stories as assigned

Requirements:

  • At least 5 years experience as a political journalist

  • A proven track record of scoops and the ability to consistently break high-impact news on the national politics beat

  • Strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage a constantly evolving workload and prioritize appropriately

  • A clear, engaging, jargon-free writing style

The expected base salary range for this position is from $93,000 - $154,000. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to relevant skills, training, experience, and education.
