Summary:

The Vice Chair for Research will be charged with developing a nationally-known and prominent research agenda in Emergency Medicine. This role is responsible for articulating a vision of the Department's research in addition to recruiting candidates who will help fulfill that agenda. The person in this role will implement the infrastructure necessary for the agenda to be successful, as well as develop and promote projects integral to the agenda.
Job duties:

Strategic planning
Provide strategic direction, and operational oversight of the department's research programs and activities
Work with executive leadership to establish and measure performance metrics
Participate in the annual budgeting process in conjunction with the Chair and other Vice Chairs
Leadership
Demonstrate an understanding and support of the mission, vision and values of UAB Medicine
Effectively role model quality, patient centered comprehensive care, self-directed learning, ethical conduct, and professionalism
Foster a collaborative research environment in which faculty with a research assignment can be successful
Collaborate with senior leadership to drive, support, and model an innovation- and entrepreneurial-oriented culture focused on high-quality clinical and translational research
Collaborate with the Senior Associate Dean of Clinical and Translational Research and the Senior Vice Dean for Research Compliance and Administration; attend the School of Medicine Vice Chairs for Research bi-monthly meetings
Research excellence and fiscal sustainability
Develop opportunities for research innovation and mentorship, both internally and externally to the Department
Ensure the realization of high quality and highly productive research and research education programs within established regulatory and institutional guidelines and policies
Ensure adherence to regulatory standards at an institutional, local, industry, and federal level
Contribute to the research mission by maintaining a personal program of research projects
Promote the growth and sustainability of funded research activities, actively seeking and promoting opportunities to grow resources to support the research portfolio
Practice fiscal stewardship to ensure the research program maintains a fiscally sustainable model
Assist with developing infrastructure necessary to maintain the research environment
Clinical support
Participate in clinical shifts at the Chair's discretion to maintain clinical skills and continue an understanding of the operations and topical issues of the emergency departments

UAB Medicine is the third-largest public academic medical center in the country, with more than 1,900 beds and almost 18,000 employees. UAB Hospital is the centerpiece of the UAB Health System and is the teaching hospital for the UAB School of Medicine. Situated among major research centers and clinics, UAB Hospital provides patients with a complete range of primary and specialty care services, as well as the most up-to-date treatments and innovations in health care. In addition to UAB Hospital, UAB Medicine includes The Kirklin Clinic of UAB Hospital, UAB Callahan Eye Hospital, as well as several primary and specialty care clinics, a dozen member and affiliate hospitals within Alabama, more than 10 cancer associates in the Southeast, and the Viva Health HMO.
Recently, UAB expanded further by acquiring five hospitals from the Ascension St. Vincent's Health System. This acquisition added 5,000 employees, 409 beds, and outpatient facilities, which include hospitals in Birmingham, Blount, Chilton, East, and St. Clair counties; the One Nineteen campus; the Trussville Freestanding Emergency Department; imaging centers; and other clinics.
