What is a live in environmental software engineer?

A Live In Environmental Software Engineer is a professional who develops and maintains software solutions specifically designed to address environmental issues, such as monitoring air and water quality, managing renewable energy systems, or supporting conservation efforts. The 'live in' aspect may refer to engineers who work on-site at facilities or in field locations where environmental monitoring or data collection occurs, allowing them to better understand and respond to real-time environmental challenges. These engineers combine expertise in software development with a passion for sustainability and environmental protection, often collaborating with scientists and environmental specialists to create impactful technology.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a live in environmental software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Live In Environmental Software Engineer, you need a strong background in environmental science combined with software development skills, typically supported by a degree in computer science, environmental engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with programming languages (such as Python or R), GIS software, and data analysis tools, as well as relevant certifications like LEED or environmental software credentials, are highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication are essential soft skills for working in diverse environments and collaborating with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure the development of robust, user-friendly solutions that address environmental challenges and support sustainable practices.

How does a live in environmental software engineer typically collaborate with scientists and field teams to develop effective solutions?

As a Live In Environmental Software Engineer, you will often work closely with environmental scientists and field teams to understand real-world data collection challenges and translate them into software solutions. This collaboration usually involves regular meetings, on-site fieldwork, and feedback sessions to ensure the software addresses practical needs such as data accuracy, usability in remote locations, and hardware integration. Strong communication and adaptability are crucial, as you'll need to bridge the gap between technical development and environmental fieldwork. This hands-on, team-oriented approach not only makes the role dynamic but also provides valuable experience in multidisciplinary teamwork.

Software Engineer - Live Link
Truveta is the world's first health provider led data platform with a vision of Saving Lives with Data. Our mission is to enable researchers to find cures faster, empower every clinician to be an expert, and help families make the most informed decisions about their care. Achieving Truveta's ambitious vision requires an incredible team of talented and inspired people with a special combination of health, software and big data experience who share our company values.

Truveta is building a diverse and inclusive team to tackle complex health and technical challenges. We are seeking enthusiastic new graduates who are problem-solvers, collaborative teammates, and eager to make a difference in healthcare. If you're excited about purposeful work, joining a mission-driven team, and launching your career in a supportive environment, Truveta could be the perfect place to start.
This Opportunity
At Truveta, you'll work on impactful projects in a dynamic environment, solving computing challenges that can directly improve lives. This role provides opportunities for professional growth while contributing to healthcare technology at scale.
Patients, doctors, and medical researchers deserve to benefit from the large-scale technological innovations and digital intelligence that have transformed other industries. At Truveta, we are building technology that enables healthcare organizations to securely derive insights from data at scale and improve health outcomes.
We are seeking a Software Engineer to design, build, and operate the backend services that power Truveta's Live Link and Entitlements capabilities. In this role, you will build APIs, distributed services, databases, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure that form the backend foundation for customer-facing scenarios. You will work closely with Product, Architecture, Solutions, and engineering teams across Truveta to translate customer and product needs into scalable, secure, and reliable technical solutions. This role spans application, data, and infrastructure layers and provides the opportunity to own meaningful backend capabilities from design through production operations.
This position requires innovative problem-solving to design high-performance, cost-effective data services capable of handling large-scale datasets. The efficiency, reliability, and security of these services are essential to advancing our mission to save lives with data.
We are seeking engineers who:
  • Have proven experience building reliable, secure and scalable software solutions using modern cloud-based paradigms
  • Are quick learners, who knows how to iterate and evolve a distributed software solution while carefully balancing the needs of privacy, security and reliability against a changing product landscape
  • Have knowledge and experience in using and developing distributed systems, data pipelines, and APIs
  • Engineer systems for scalability, resilience, observability, performance, security, and maintainability.
  • Build secure services by default, with careful attention to authentication, authorization, entitlements, secrets management, privacy, dependency security, and least-privilege access.
  • Take ownership of services through design, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, troubleshooting, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Work effectively with Product, Architecture, Solutions, and engineering teams across Truveta to deliver end-to-end customer scenarios.
  • Contribute to deployment automation, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, and production reliability.
  • Will adhere to Truveta principles in support of ethical innovation
  • Willingness to commit to ongoing training on key topics like privacy, ethics, and security

Key Qualifications
  • 2+ years of professional software engineering experience, including experience building production-quality software.
  • Experience developing software in one or more programming languages (Ex. C#, Python, Java) and a strong understanding of data structures and algorithms.
  • Experience designing, building, deploying, and operating backend services and APIs in production.
  • Experience with distributed systems, data pipelines, or large-scale data-processing systems.
  • Experience working with relational databases and NoSQL data stores.
  • Understanding of software architecture principles, design patterns, API design, and engineering best practices.
  • Experience debugging and troubleshooting production systems.
  • Experience with modern cloud-native platforms; Microsoft Azure experience is preferred.
  • Experience with containers and Kubernetes is preferred.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and infrastructure-as-code is preferred.
  • Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.
  • S. or M.S. in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Why Truveta?
Be a part of building something special. Now is the perfect time to join Truveta. We have strong, established leadership with decades of success. We are well-funded. We are building a culture that prioritizes people and their passions across personal, professional and everything in between. Join us as we build an amazing company together.
We Offer:
  • Interesting and meaningful work for every career stage
  • Great benefits package
  • Comprehensive benefits with strong medical, dental and vision insurance plans
  • 401K plan
  • Professional development & training opportunities for continuous learning
  • Work/life autonomy via flexible work hours and flexible paid time off
  • Generous parental leave
  • Regular team activities (virtual and in-person)
  • The base pay for this position is $91,000 to $125,000. The pay range reflects the minimum and maximum target.
