About Red Dog

Red Dog Operations is both the largest critical minerals mine in the United States and one of the largest zinc mines in the world. In 1982, Red Dog was developed through a partnership between Teck and the land-owner NANA, an Alaska Native corporation owned by the Iñupiat of northwest Alaska. The partnership between Teck and NANA ensures real benefits for the local Iñupiat community, while recognizing there is still more to do as we advance our commitment to sustainable practices and meaningful engagement.

Role Summary

Reporting to the Construction Manager, the Construction Superintendent is accountable for creating value and mitigating risks associated with construction work scopes of the RDO MLE Project. The Construction Superintendent is accountable for the activities required to move the major capital project through execution in accordance with Teck Projects Framework. The key focus area for this role is to deliver the construction scope to meet the project goals in accordance with the agreed construction execution strategy and construction management plan, generally, by overseeing the service provider's scope, and the scope managed directly by Teck.

This role provides on‑site leadership to all disciplines but with a focus on Mechanical, Piping and Electrical Infrastructure, ensuring work is completed in accordance with project schedules, specifications, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

The Construction Superintendent collaborates with members of the project, functional and operational leadership teams in reviewing and supervising quality management plans, HSEC plans, estimates, budgets, schedules, procurement plans, contracting plans and provides specific expertise in construction strategizing and site management. The scope of this role includes participation in design and constructability reviews as well as risk assessments. Incorporation of innovation and technology to reduce hazard exposure to people and the environment through safety in design and sustainability practices throughout the construction and operational phases is also an essential component of the role.

There are two positions available, and the ideal candidates would be either a Construction Superintendent Electrical focused and another Mechanical/Piping focused.

Don't miss out on this outstanding opportunity to be part of one of Canada's leading mining companies and join our team!

Responsibilities

  • Be a courageous safety leader, sponsoring Teck’s values and embedding a robust HSEC program and culture.
  • Establish a safe, respectful, and environmentally responsible worksite.
  • Assess and review workforce levels to attain schedule milestones while maximizing productivity. This involves collaboration with the project controls team to implement the necessary adjustments to meet construction requirements.

  • Oversee the activities of the CM service provider to drive strong performance by implementing the construction management plan, the quality management plan and the contractual agreement. This entails directing the CM service provider to remedy any deviations from the respective plans.
  • Execute construction work by planning and implementing the set-up phase, monitoring performance, recommending or taking corrective actions, reporting status, escalating issues, capturing and communicating lessons learned.
  • Work with operations on interface management to implement the permit-to-work process, reduce shutdown durations, optimize crane usage, and leverage the utilization of current operational resources and processes.
  • Engage with engineering, information management, project controls, risk management, HSSE, accounting, operational readiness, procurement and supply chain management functions as needed to maximize project efficiency and ensure alignment of construction activities.
  • Maintain a strong collaborative relationship with existing operations stakeholders during site establishment, construction, commissioning, start-up, and site demobilization. This includes managing operational interfaces, OH&S, environmental compliance, and community issues.
  • Ensure that the construction execution plan and schedule are further detailed in conjunction with contractors and Operations to reflect the most current understanding of the overall plan.
  • Monitor construction activities against the construction plan and contract conditions, with support from staff and contractor input. Provide timely reporting on progress, cost, and schedule. Update and forecast planned work and schedule to reflect changes as the work progresses.
  • Facilitate and coordinate work amongst contractors, operational personnel and others contributing to the effort.
  • Monitor productivity and cost of the brownfield scope, as well as implement appropriate action to maintain maximum labor productivity and cost effectiveness.
  • Maintain the quality of work in accordance with the quality management plan and the standards as specified in the design documents.
  • Collaborate with site Operational Leadership for engagement in interface planning, facilitating early alignment, and final sign off.
  • Prior FIFO or remote site experience.
