Theatre Technician
JOB CLASSIFICATION

Location: Primarily Main Campus, but any location assigned by the appropriate administrator
SUMMARY
The Theater Technician provides technical and operational support for performances, academic programs, campus events, and external rentals held in the Performing Arts Center and other College venues. This position is responsible for the setup, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of theatrical lighting, sound, projection, stage, and rigging equipment while ensuring a safe, professional, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, community partners, and guests.
Multiple positions.
POSITION DESCRIPTION
  • Represent and uphold the standards, policies, and procedures of the Performing Arts Center (PAC).
  • Provide technical support for internal and external events by setting up, operating, and troubleshooting lighting, sound, projection, and stage equipment.
  • Work with faculty, staff, students, performers, and rental clients to meet event production needs.
  • Set up event equipment, including tables, chairs, podiums, microphones, and staging.
  • Coordinate with the Events and Scheduling Department, Facilities, Media Services, and other departments to ensure successful event operations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of theatrical lighting, sound reinforcement, projection, and stage equipment.
  • Working knowledge of theatrical lighting and audio consoles.
  • Basic knowledge of theatrical rigging systems and safe operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of presentation software and audiovisual equipment.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical equipment during live events.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with multiple departments.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple events and adapt to changing schedules.
  • Ability to interact professionally with students, faculty, staff, community organizations, and external clients.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and flexible hours based on event schedules.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Experience with theatrical lighting, sound, audiovisual systems, or live event production.
  • Basic knowledge of theater lighting, sound, projection, and stage operations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience supporting theatrical productions or live events in an educational or performing arts environment.
  • Experience operating digital audio consoles, theatrical lighting systems, and projection equipment.
  • Current or past KCKCC theater or Audio Engineering student.

WORKING CONDITIONS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, and occasionally push or lift items. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Additional requirements include:
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Set up and move tables, chairs, staging, podiums, audiovisual equipment, and production equipment.
  • Ability to hear instructions in a low controlled volume environment.

  • Work around theatrical lighting, elevated platforms, electrical equipment, and rigging systems.

WORK SCHEDULE
Hours will be within 7:00AM - 11:00PM and based on the individual event. Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours.
