What is litigation support?

Litigation support refers to the assistance provided to attorneys and legal teams in managing large-scale or complex litigation. Professionals in this field handle tasks such as organizing evidence, managing electronic discovery (e-discovery), preparing trial exhibits, and utilizing specialized software to streamline case management. They play a crucial role in ensuring that legal proceedings are efficient and that all necessary documentation and digital evidence are properly managed and presented. Litigation support specialists often have backgrounds in technology, law, or both, making them vital to modern legal practices.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a litigation support professional?

To thrive in Litigation Support, you need expertise in legal procedures, case management, and e-discovery, often backed by a bachelor's degree in a related field. Familiarity with litigation support software such as Relativity, Concordance, and case management systems, as well as certifications like ACEDS, is highly valuable. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication help professionals collaborate with attorneys and manage complex data efficiently. These skills and qualifications are essential for ensuring accurate, timely, and organized support throughout the litigation process.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in litigation support, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in litigation support often encounter challenges such as managing tight deadlines, handling large volumes of electronic data, and adapting to evolving legal technologies. To address these, strong organizational skills, proficiency with e-discovery tools, and ongoing training in new software are essential. Collaboration with attorneys, IT staff, and paralegals is also key to ensuring that processes run smoothly and that all evidentiary materials are properly managed and presented. Staying proactive in communication and maintaining flexibility can greatly help in overcoming these challenges.

Job description

FBFK Law is a growing, entrepreneurial-minded business law firm with seven offices across Texas and California. We're adding a Litigation Legal Assistant to our Houston office โ€” a newly created position supporting multiple attorneys and paralegals in a fast-paced litigation practice. This is a great opportunity for an experienced litigation support professional who wants real ownership over case logistics and a direct line to the attorneys and paralegals they support.

FBFK was named the No. 1 Overall Leading Law Firm among Small Firms โ€” and No. 1 for Growth โ€” in Bloomberg Law's 2026 Leading Law Firms rankings, and was ranked among Bloomberg Law's Top 10 Small Firms for Technology & Innovation. We were also named to Fortune's America's Most Innovative Companies 2026 list, ranking No. 88 out of 300 organizations nationwide alongside companies like Microsoft, Apple, and Google โ€” the only law firm on the list. On top of that, FBFK was recognized in 18 practice areas โ€” including four Tier 1 rankings โ€” in the 2026 Best Law Firms guide published by Best Lawyers, with 18 of our attorneys individually recognized in the 2026 edition of The Best Lawyers in Americaยฎ.

That recognition isn't an accident โ€” it reflects a firm that genuinely invests in modern technology and looks for better, smarter ways to get things done, rather than defaulting to "the way it's always been."

That mindset matters for this role. You'll work alongside attorneys who have fully embraced e-filing, document automation, and AI-assisted tools โ€” and alongside others who still hand-write drafts and dictate notes for you to transcribe. We need someone who moves comfortably between both, who's genuinely curious about better ways to do the work, and who isn't rattled by new tools, new processes, or a change in direction.

About the Role
You'll provide day-to-day litigation support from filing through trial and appeal: preparing and finalizing pleadings and correspondence, managing e-filing across federal and state courts, tracking deadlines and court dates, and coordinating the logistics behind depositions, hearings, and trial. You'll work closely with a team of attorneys and paralegals handling business and commercial litigation, employment litigation, real estate litigation, intellectual property litigation, and estate/trust litigation โ€” this is not a personal injury, family law, or immigration practice, and candidates whose litigation background is limited to those areas will not be a fit for the caseload here.

What You'll Do
โ€ขย ย  ย Prepare, proofread, and finalize pleadings, correspondence, and court filings in accordance with court rules and firm standards
โ€ขย ย  ย File documents with federal and state courts via e-filing systems (CM/ECF and state portals) and track service of process
โ€ขย ย  ย Manage attorney calendars and monitor litigation deadlines โ€” discovery cutoffs, motion deadlines, hearings, and trial dates
โ€ขย ย  ย Coordinate logistics for depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and hearings, including court reporters and vendors
โ€ขย ย  ย Organize and maintain case files in NetDocs and prepare binders and materials for depositions, hearings, and trial
โ€ขย ย  ย Assist with trial preparation, including exhibit and witness coordination and trial notebooks
โ€ขย ย  ย Serve as a day-to-day point of contact for clients on scheduling and administrative matters
โ€ขย ย  ย Accurately record all time worked, billable and non-billable, on a daily basis

What We're Looking For
โ€ขย ย  ย At least 2 years of litigation legal assistant experience in a law firm, supporting business/commercial, employment, real estate, IP, or estate/trust litigation matters
โ€ขย ย  ย Comfortable supporting multiple attorneys and paralegals at once, in a busy, deadline-driven practice
โ€ขย ย  ย Hands-on experience with federal and state e-filing systems and court procedures
โ€ขย ย  ย Strong docketing and deadline-management skills
โ€ขย ย  ย Proficiency in Microsoft Office; experience with a document management system (NetDocs a plus)
โ€ขย ย  ย Genuinely tech-savvy and curious โ€” someone who looks for a better or faster way to do things and is comfortable picking up new software, tools, and AI-assisted platforms
โ€ขย ย  ย Flexible enough to work well with attorneys who have very different working styles, including transcribing handwritten drafts and dictated notes for attorneys who prefer more traditional methods
โ€ขย ย  ย Not afraid of change โ€” comfortable taking on new challenges, learning new processes, and adjusting on the fly
โ€ขย ย  ย High attention to detail, discretion, and the judgment to keep multiple cases moving without dropping a deadline

Candidates whose litigation experience is limited to personal injury, family law, or immigration matters are not being considered for this role.

Compensation & Benefits
This position offers a base salary of $58,000โ€“$75,000 (approximately $28โ€“$36/hour), commensurate with experience, plus a full benefits package. As a non-exempt role, overtime is paid in accordance with the FLSA. This is a 100% on-site position based out of our Houston office at 3200 Southwest Freeway, Suite 3200, Houston, TX 77027.

FBFK Law is an equal opportunity employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other protected characteristic under applicable law.
