What is a Lisp programmer?

Lisp programmers are software developers who specialize in using the Lisp programming language to design, build, and maintain software applications. Lisp, one of the oldest high-level programming languages, is known for its unique parenthetical syntax and powerful features for symbolic computation and artificial intelligence. Lisp programmers often work in fields like AI research, data analysis, and academic computing, leveraging the language's flexibility and dynamic capabilities. They may also contribute to maintaining and extending legacy systems that rely on Lisp code.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Lisp developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Lisp Developer, you need a strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, proficiency in Common Lisp or Scheme, and experience with functional programming concepts. Familiarity with development tools like SLIME (Superior Lisp Interaction Mode for Emacs), version control systems, and experience with debugging and profiling Lisp code are typically required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help developers collaborate on complex projects and convey technical concepts. These skills ensure efficient code development, maintainability, and successful project outcomes in environments utilizing Lisp.

How do Lisp developers typically collaborate with other team members in software development projects?

Lisp developers often work closely with cross-functional teams, including front-end developers, system architects, and project managers, to build and maintain robust software systems. Collaboration usually involves regular code reviews, pair programming sessions, and participation in sprint planning or agile meetings. Communication is essential, as Lisp code may be less familiar to some team members, so developers often provide documentation or walkthroughs to ensure alignment. This collaborative approach helps integrate Lisp components smoothly with other technologies and ensures project goals are met efficiently.

Job description

Company Name: Kahuna U SA, LLC (Kahuna)

Title of position: Senior Designer II

Position type: Full Time

Pay range: $38–$44 Hourly

Location: Westminster, Colorado

About Kahuna USA

Kahuna is an energy-focused organization, driven by growth, project execution, and long-term relationships. We offer a fast-paced, collaborative, and rewarding work environment rooted in our core values: Integrity, Relationships, Innovation, Safety, and Empowerment. We are committed to creating a workplace that employees are proud to be part of — and one they can build a long and fulfilling career with.

About the Role

The Senior Designer II role is a highly advanced position for individuals with deep expertise across all aspects of piping design and drafting. In this role, you will lead the execution of mid-sized projects and oversee multiple design efforts concurrently, ensuring alignment with project objectives, standards, and timelines.

You will operate with broad, high-level direction from supervisors while exercising strong independent judgment in design decisions and project execution. This role requires advanced proficiency in AutoCAD® and CADWorx Plant®, along with a comprehensive understanding of industry standards, materials, and best practices.

In addition to leading project work, you will play a key role in team development, providing guidance to junior and mid-level designers, reviewing work for quality and consistency, and supporting overall team performance. You will also contribute to the evolution of Kahuna’s design standards, tools, and processes, helping to drive continuous improvement.

This role serves as a critical step in leadership development, building the skills and experience necessary for progression into a Lead Designer position.

What You’ll Do

  • Expert P&ID and piping annotation skills; able to pick up redlines following Kahuna standards, spot errors, back-check other’s work, and develop P&IDs from walkdowns with little to no instruction.
  • Proficient with advanced 3D modeling using CADWorx Plant® (or AutoCAD Plant 3D®) with little guidance; consistently produces complex facility models independently.
  • Medium size facility level piping ability; taking ownership of areas of larger facilities, familiar with pipe rack loading and a strong grasp of clean and efficient piping routing.
  • Assist in leading site plan layout for larger facilities.
  • Independently lead piping of mid-sized projects or multiple small projects while checking in on lower-level designers and coordinating with designers and engineers.
  • Lead development of group standards and practices; proactively lead evolution of team designs and pre-developed tools/templates. Basic knowledge of V-Lisp and CUI recommended.
  • Independently assist with and review drawings of other less experienced designers and markup as necessary; able to mentor and train less experienced drafters/designers. Stay engaged and learn leadership skills.
  • Leads coordination with other design teams to ensure continuous flow of information concerning other engineering disciplines affecting the design execution of a project.
  • Demonstrate full understanding of the workflow from beginning to end of a project. Provides technical and administrative support to the discipline design group, reviews their progress, and evaluates their work.
  • Consistently communicate technical and administrative project/task details including correspondence via emails and general documentation. Proactive in communicating project status and workload.
  • Consistently meeting deadlines, able to juggle multiple large projects with conflicting deadlines, identifying potential delays and proactively mitigating them.
  • Demonstrate professional behavior and be learning to coach and mentor less experienced designers. Stay engaged and develop leadership skills.
  • Applies ASME B31.3, B31.1, and applicable B16 series codes throughout the design and modeling process. Understand, implement, and apply engineering specifications and codes to the modeling process.
  • Proven track record of being detail oriented, precise, and organized in handling of drawings; able to prioritize and multitask as an individual and for the team.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

What You’ll Bring

  • 5–9 years of progressive relevant design experience or equivalent; 5 years minimum required.
  • CADWorx Plant® proficiency required (or AutoCAD Plant 3D® at equivalent level); independently builds and manages advanced 3D facility models with little to no guidance.
  • Superior knowledge of available Navisworks® tools; able to operate Freedom, Manage, and Simulate and perform a presentation with a client using all modes.
  • Superior proficiency in AutoCAD®; understands, can edit and use LISP routines; is learning to create new tools to be more efficient; can troubleshoot computer issues and provide technical assistance to others.
  • Strong computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Office, AutoCAD®, CADWorx P&ID®, CADWorx Plant®, Bluebeam Revu®, Navisworks®, and other company software.
  • A minimum of 4 years relative experience in oil and gas design or equivalent industrial environment.
  • Knowledge of basic safety procedures on an active facility.
  • Knowledge of gathering field dimensions, P&ID as-building, and walking down P&IDs to determine tie-in locations on an active facility is a plus.
  • Laser scanning and point cloud drafting capabilities a plus.
  • Basic process knowledge — PFD interpretation and process flow context a plus.
