Position Overview
Join a dynamic team responsible for managing the core infrastructure services that power our business operations. The Linux Administration Team oversees the support, maintenance, and evolution of our Linux infrastructure. The team also manages key service platforms: storage, backup, VMware, SAN, networking, and other critical infrastructure technologies.
A Day In The Life
The Lead Administrator, Linux Systems, plays a role in managing and maintaining Linux-based systems within an organization. They are responsible for ensuring the stability, security, and optimal performance of Linux servers. This role will collaborate with the different teams in IT to handle Linux-based infrastructure, troubleshoot issues, and provide technical support to users. This role requires a strong understanding of Linux operating systems, networking, hardware, scripting languages, and automation. In this role, the Lead Administrator, Linux Systems, will need to perform both engineering tasks and day-to-day Linux admin duties. We are a 24x7 company, and this role will need to be able to work in an on-call rotation that runs 365 days a year as part of our support model.

Key Responsibilities
  • Install, configure, and maintain Linux operating systems and related software.
  • Monitor system performance, troubleshoot issues, ensuring high availability and reliability
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement Linux-based solutions that meet business needs.
  • Implement and maintain security measures to protect Linux systems from unauthorized access and ensure compliance with industry regulations.
  • Perform regular system backups and disaster recovery procedures to minimize data loss and maintain business continuity.
  • Automate system tasks using scripting languages such as Bash or Python to streamline processes and improve efficiency.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls to ensure proper system security and data integrity.
  • Install, configure, and maintain network services, including DNS, DHCP, and LDAP.
  • Collaborate with software developers, application teams, system analysts, and vendors to troubleshoot and resolve software compatibility issues on Linux platforms.
  • Evaluate and recommend hardware and software upgrades to improve system performance and scalability.
  • Install, configure, and maintain VMware components, such as ESXi hosts, clusters, vSphere and running guests.
  • Conduct routine hardware and software audits of servers to ensure compliance with established standards, policies, and configuration guidelines.
  • Create and maintain system documentation, standard operating procedures, and disaster recovery plans; and promote best practices
  • The ability to work independently, run a project, develop plans, send communications, and execute it end-to-end

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, a related field or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Linux Engineer or a similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of Linux operating systems, including Red Hat, SUSE, or other common distributions.
  • Expertise in Linux command-line interface (CLI), shell scripting (bash, Python, Perl, etc...).
  • Experience with configuration management and automation tools, such as Ansible, Terraform, Puppet, etc...
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms, such as Azure, GCP or AWS.
  • Strong understanding of vSphere or similar virtualization technologies, compute, hardware and server management.
  • Familiarity with networking concepts, protocols, and services, including TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, NTP, and VPN.
  • Knowledge of storage technologies, such as RAID, SAN, and NAS.
  • Knowledge of backup technologies, such as Veeam and Rubrik.
  • Familiarity and experience with building and maintaining RPMs and other Linux package types.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools like Datadog, Dynatrace, Nagios or SolarWinds
  • Understanding of security best practices and experience in implementing security measures on Linux systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with the ability to quickly identify and resolve technical issues.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment, collaborating with cross-functional teams within IT and other business units.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively communicate technical concepts and solutions to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Detail-oriented mindset with a focus on accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt to new technologies and stay updated with industry trends and advancements

Preferred Qualifications
  • Relevant certifications such as Linux Professional Institute Certification (LPIC) or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE).
  • Experience in DevOps working with containers, Docker, and Kubernetes.
  • Experience with configuring, deploying LUNs, and other storage array level management.
  • Experience working with NAS platforms, managing NFS, SMB, and CIFS exports.
  • Experience with configuring, tuning, and troubleshoot Oracle Databases running on Linux servers in both single instances and RAC clusters.

Physical Requirements
  • Standard office environment; extended periods at a computer workstation.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays during critical incidents or maintenance.
  • Ability to occasionally rack and cable equipment in a data center
  • Ability to occasionally travel to data center locations. Within the state and possibly out state.
