Job description

Summit Technologies Inc. is seeking a Senior Embedded Systems Engineer (Applied / Hands On) to engineer applied development and prototyping for advanced power and energy propulsion systems for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVโ€™s). This role is ideal for engineers who enjoy building, testing, and troubleshooting hardware and firmware in a lab environment and translating advanced concepts into working prototypes. You will work with an interdisciplinary research and development team comprised of engineering, scientific, power generation, power storage, and security experts to develop, implement, and test embedded systems solutions utilized in UUVs. Leverage your experience in robotics, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous vehicles, space systems, missile systems, submarines, robotic warfare, and/or naval technologies to develop advanced UUV systems supporting national security missions, ocean exploration, and subsea infrastructure. Certain innovations may also be deployed across other functional domains within the clientโ€™s established commercial power generation, storage, and distribution systems. This is a full-time, on-site role located in Niskayuna, NY. Only U.S. citizens will be considered, as this position requires an active U.S. DoD Secret clearance. Roles & Responsibilities: Design, implement, and test embedded systems for propulsion and electromechanical systems.
Engineer real-time control systems for motors, actuators, and propulsion subsystems.
Integrate embedded systems with sensors, control electronics, and hardware platforms.
Create firmware solutions deployed in Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), System on Chip (SOC), and Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLDs).
Generate firmware documentation that describes the firmware architecture
Participate in lab-based testing, debugging, and prototype bring-up.
Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineers to refine designs.
Support demonstrations and experimental prototypes for customers.
Collaborate with hardware suppliers and engineering tool providers to identify and select solutions for challenging industrial and defense applications.
Contribute to technical documentation, system integration, and design reviews.
Education & Experience Requirements: Masterโ€™s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related disciplines with a minimum of ten years of industry experience [bachelorโ€™s degree in computer science, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related disciplines with a minimum of 15 years of industry experience may be substituted as an equivalent].
Practical experience developing embedded systems in lab or prototype environments.
Three years of strong Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGA)/System on Chip (SoC) design and development experience with Verilog and VHDL.
Three years of knowledge of Xilinx and/or Altera devices, tools, and ecosystem (e.g., ModelSim, Intel Quartus, Xilinx Vivado).
Three years of experience with the development of real-time embedded applications and systems on microcontrollers, FPGAs, x86, and/or ARM processors.
Three years of experience with heterogeneous computer architecture and hardware acceleration techniques.
Three years of experience in embedded programming skills (e.g., C/C++/C#, Java, Python, MATLAB).
Three years of experience with Linux driver and/or Linux kernel development and Linux build systems (e.g., Yocto).
Working knowledge of real-time hypervisors (e.g., RTS, VxWorks) and containers (e.g., Docker) is desired.
Experience with real-time operating systems (e.g., QNX, RTLinux) is a plus.
Understanding of embedded system security requirements and cyber security techniques is preferred.
