Description

Qualis is hiring a Linux System Engineer (Level III) to provide Technical Support as a System Engineer for the 96 Range Control Squadron (96 RNCS). This position supports the 96 RNCS at Eglin AFB, FL. The Linux Systems Engineer is responsible for planning, engineering, implementation, security, and sustainment of Linux‑based systems supporting high‑performance computing (HPC) environments.


Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Linux distributions such as RHEL, Rocky
  • Automation frameworks (Ansible, Puppet, Salt)
  • Scripting in Bash, Python, or similar languages

Recommended additional Knowledge and Skills

  • HPC schedulers such as Slurm, PBS Pro
  • Parallel filesystems (Lustre, BeeGFS, GPFS)
  • High‑speed interconnects such as InfiniBand
  • Containerization for HPC (Singularity/Apptainer, Podman)
Essential Functions:
  • Designs, implements, secures, and maintains Linux environments across physical, virtual, and HPC platforms; provides expert‑level configuration, tuning, and lifecycle management.
  • Engineers and administers HPC clusters, including compute nodes, high‑speed interconnects (InfiniBand), parallel filesystems, and workload managers such as Slurm or PBS Pro.
  • Conducts in‑depth performance assessments of HPC workloads and Linux systems; identifies bottlenecks and recommends optimizations involving CPU, memory, storage, networking, and parallel I/O.
  • Designs, deploys, and maintains high‑throughput storage solutions (Lustre, VAST) to support large‑scale computational workloads.
  • Develops automation for provisioning, configuration management, patching, and cluster lifecycle operations using tools such as Ansible, or Warewulf.
  • Implements DoD cybersecurity controls, STIGs, RMF requirements, and secure configuration baselines across Linux and HPC systems; supports vulnerability remediation and audit readiness.
  • Defines and implements monitoring and logging strategies to ensure system health, performance visibility, and mission assurance across HPC and enterprise Linux environments.
  • Performs advanced diagnostics and root‑cause analysis for complex system, cluster, and network issues; leads resolution efforts and develops long‑term corrective actions.
  • Produces detailed engineering documentation, system diagrams, and operational procedures; provides expert guidance to mission partners, researchers, and system operators.
  • Demonstrates familiarity with computer hardware maintenance, including racking and stacking servers, replacing failed components, performing basic diagnostics, and managing cabling within data center and HPC environments. Supports physical installation, decommissioning, and hands‑on troubleshooting of compute nodes, storage appliances, and network interfaces
  • Must be able to effectively communicate orally and possess technical writing skills. Must be able to work effectively as part of a test team.
  • Ensure local services are reliable (account management, storage arrays, disaster recovery, backups, etc.)
  • Responsible for the installation and maintenance of security patches on Production, Integrations, and Development systems


Requirements:

  • A bachelor's or master’s degree in Computer Science or other relevant field with 3-10 years of experience.
  • Must have experience with Linux operating system and scripting languages (e.g., Bash, Python or Perl). Prefer candidate to be Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE).
  • Experience using VMware virtualization with storage appliances.
  • Experience in Risk Management Framework (RMF) required.
  • Must be compliant with DoD 8140 with Security + CE certification.
  • Must have ability to quickly understand the customers’ overall technical objectives and apply effective solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills along with customer interaction.
  • Must exemplify a dedication to achieving the mission of the 96TW as well as high standards of quality and excellence in performing the duties.
  • Must be able to work effectively alone, unsupervised, or within a group
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment while being able to prioritize work to balance multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Highly sought after Red Hat Identity Management experience.


Security Clearance: Must have an ability to obtain a DoD Secret Security Clearance with ability to obtain and maintain a Top Secret
