Job description

The System Administrator role is responsible for effective provisioning, installation/configuration, operation, and maintenance of systems hardware and software and related infrastructure. This individual participates in technical research and development to enable continuing innovation within the infrastructure. This individual also ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures adhere to organizational values, which will enable staff, volunteers, and partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Install new / rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements.
  • Research and recommend innovative, and where possible, automated approaches for system administration tasks. Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide scalable solutions.
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
  • Build and maintain secure systems.
  • Provide escalation, problem management, and investigate and troubleshoot issues.
  • Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted users / departments.

Prerequisites: 

  • Ability to communicate and discuss information with others, which involves terminology or concepts not familiar to many people; regularly provide advice and recommend actions involving rather complex issues.
  • Highly tuned troubleshooting and analysis skills are necessary to this role.
  • Ability to move easily between complex issues, keeping focus on needs and responding well to demanding moments.
  • Stay current with training and awareness around changing business needs and the appropriate technology to meet and exceed those needs.
  • Willingness to operate as part of a team.

The physical demands of this position include a blend of active and desk work. You will be on your feet for most of the day, standing and walking frequntly, potentially kneeling, crouching, stepping onto ladders, and/or working at a desk. This position is expected to frequently lift/exert up to 50 lbs of force, seldom up to 75 lbs. The full physical requirements of this job are available upon request.
