Linux Operations Engineer information

What does a Linux operations engineer do?

A Linux Operations Engineer is responsible for maintaining, monitoring, and optimizing Linux-based servers and systems within an organization. They ensure the stability, security, and performance of Linux environments by performing tasks such as system updates, troubleshooting, automation scripting, and backup management. Additionally, they collaborate with other IT teams to deploy new applications, resolve incidents, and implement best practices for system administration. Their role is crucial in supporting critical business operations that rely on Linux infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Linux operations engineer?

To thrive as a Linux Operations Engineer, you need strong expertise in Linux system administration, scripting (such as Bash or Python), and troubleshooting, typically supported by a degree in computer science or relevant certifications like RHCE. Familiarity with configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet), monitoring systems, and cloud platforms is often required. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork skills help set candidates apart in dynamic environments. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining system stability, ensuring security, and enabling efficient collaboration in complex IT infrastructures.

What are some typical challenges a Linux operations engineer might face when managing large-scale production environments?

Linux Operations Engineers frequently encounter challenges such as ensuring high availability of systems, troubleshooting complex infrastructure issues, and maintaining security compliance across diverse environments. Managing configuration drift, automating repetitive tasks, and responding to on-call incidents are common aspects of the role. Effective communication and collaboration with development, security, and network teams are essential, especially when implementing changes or resolving outages in a fast-paced production setting.

What is the difference between Linux Operations Engineer vs Linux System Administrator?

Job description

We're looking for a self-motivated, technically sharp engineer to support the operational health of Wolverine Execution Services' (WEX) core trading systems. You'll partner with software and hardware engineering teams to monitor real-time system performance, troubleshoot production issues, and build tools that keep pace with a growing and increasingly complex technical environment.

This is a highly visible role in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. Strong candidates are clear communicators, effective multi-taskers, and sharp problem solvers who stay focused under pressure.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical operational issues on live trading systems
  • Perform intraday troubleshooting of production systems, communicating status clearly to stakeholders
  • Set up and maintain monitoring tools across server hardware and software, using a mix of in-house and third-party tools to ensure system stability
  • Maintain production trading infrastructure, including databases, transaction servers, gateways, and web servers
  • Certify new exchange links, including FIX and other protocols
  • Work with vendors (exchanges, ECNs, etc.) to resolve production issues
  • Collaborate with Traders, Software Developers, and Network Engineers to deploy new strategies, reconfigure existing ones, and track changes
  • Partner with trading stakeholders and Software Developers to identify and implement systems and process improvements
  • Create and maintain performance reports for individual clients and the system as a whole
  • Document support processes, known issues, and workarounds
Core requirements:
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, with experience investigating critical issues in a live production environment
  • Experience using a relational database to store, manipulate, and access data
  • Ability to synthesize data from multiple sources to identify issues or trends
  • Ability to work collaboratively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Driven to iteratively improve systems and processes
Preferred:
  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline
  • Working knowledge of scripting, regular expressions, or the FIX protocol
  • Familiarity with Linux scripting
  • Familiarity with TCP/UDP protocols and network packet captures
  • Understanding of trading industry concepts and terminology
Our flat organizational structure promotes teamwork across the Firm and offers easy access to senior staff. While we work exceptionally well as a team in the office, our bonds are further strengthened through company events, activities and giving back. Volleyball, soccer, hockey, 5K runs, picnic, parties, and trivia nights provide friendly competition and build better relationships. By getting out of our usual environment and doing out-of-the-ordinary things together, we foster creativity and broaden our imaginations to accomplish new challenges.

Benefits:
  • Highly competitive salary & bonus opportunity
  • Generous paid time off and flexible scheduling
  • 100% coverage of medical, dental, vision, life, and disability benefits for single coverage
  • Generous Paid Parental Leave
  • Retirement Plans: 401K and Roth 401K
  • Profit sharing plan
  • Long- and short-term disability
Additional Perks:
  • Free breakfast and lunch from our in-house kitchen with rotating menus (including snacks!)
  • On-site gym with a subsidized membership
  • Frequent company outings
  • Opportunity to give back to organizations that help individuals in need in the Chicagoland area
Professional Development:
  • In-house education team - classes and resources are offered for continuous learning opportunities
  • Mentorship Program through your first six months of employment
The base compensation range for this role is approximately $80,000-$120,000 contingent on experience. Wolverine Execution Services' total compensation model includes base salary and an annual discretionary bonus.
