A Linux kernel developer uses computer code to create a program that functions as the core of a computer operating system. Your duties can include creating kernels for open-source operating systems for desktop computers, laptops, phones, and tablets. You can also develop programs for embedded systems for routers, smart devices, or automated machinery. Linux uses C programming languages, so you often write code in C and C++. In addition to your coding responsibilities, you also test and debug your programs. Your employer may ask you to develop applications, drivers, and other tools to use with your kernel.
| Aspect | Linux Kernel Developer | Linux Device Driver Developer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Proficiency in C, Linux kernel development experience, often a degree in Computer Science or related field | Similar credentials, with focus on device-specific programming and hardware knowledge |
| Work Environment | Developing and maintaining core kernel components, often in a Linux environment | Writing and debugging drivers for specific hardware devices within Linux |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Tech companies, open-source projects, hardware manufacturers | Hardware manufacturers, embedded systems, specialized device companies |
While both roles require strong C programming skills and Linux knowledge, Linux Kernel Developers focus on core kernel development, whereas Linux Device Driver Developers specialize in creating drivers for hardware components. The roles often overlap but differ in scope and focus within the Linux ecosystem.

About the Team
The Technical Infrastructure team designs, builds, and operates the foundational platforms that power Williams-Sonoma, Inc. across corporate offices, retail locations, fulfillment operations, and customer-facing digital experiences. This includes compute, containers, storage, networking, observability, security, and cloud infrastructure.
Within this organization, the Linux Engineering function is responsible for delivering secure, resilient, and automated Linux platforms and shared services at enterprise scale. The team partners closely with architecture, cybersecurity, cloud, database, application, and operations teams to provide reliable infrastructure and a strong engineering experience for internal customers.
About the Role
As Systems Engineer, Linux Platform, you will support the design, administration, automation, and lifecycle management of Williams-Sonoma's Linux environments. You will help maintain platform reliability, security, scalability, and operational efficiency across on-premises and cloud-hosted systems.
This role is ideal for a hands-on infrastructure engineer with strong Linux fundamentals, growing automation capabilities, and sound operational judgment. You will partner closely with senior engineers, architects, and support teams to deliver reliable platform services, improve day-to-day operations, and contribute to the continued evolution of Linux platform engineering.
Responsibilities
Support and maintain enterprise standards for Linux platforms, including Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Linux, Rocky Linux, Ubuntu and related tooling.
Administer and support platform capabilities across OS lifecycle management, patching, repository services, configuration management, automation, and platform hardening.
Monitor and optimize Linux platform performance through kernel, system, and application tuning based on capacity, reliability, and availability requirements.
Contribute to automation and infrastructure-as-code practices across provisioning, configuration, patching, compliance, and operational workflows.
Use AI-assisted engineering practices for personal productivity and continuous improvement, including proactive monitoring workflows, script development, and log analysis to accelerate troubleshooting, reduce manual effort, and improve operational insight.
Support core Linux services and toolchains such as Satellite, Ansible, Kubernetes and related platform components.
Partner with senior engineers and architects to evaluate technologies, participate in proof-of-concept efforts, and contribute input to the Linux platform roadmap.
Gather technical requirements and help translate them into practical infrastructure designs and implementation plans.
Collaborate closely with production support and operations teams to improve runbooks, handoffs, operational readiness, and incident response effectiveness.
Create and maintain high-quality engineering documentation, including standards, build guides, implementation records, and operational procedures.
Provide data and analysis on platform health, capacity, risk, and improvement opportunities.
Share knowledge through documentation, collaboration, design reviews, and hands-on problem solving.
Criteria
3+ years of Linux systems engineering experience in enterprise or large-scale environments.
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
Strong Linux systems engineering experience within enterprise environments, including performance, security, lifecycle management, system hardening, access controls, and operational compliance requirements and troubleshooting.
Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux and adjacent platform tooling for package management, patching, configuration, hardening, and automation.
Hands-on experience with scripting and automation using Bash, Python, and other shell-based tooling.
Demonstrated interest in responsibly using AI tools to strengthen personal engineering effectiveness, especially for drafting scripts, identifying patterns in logs and telemetry, and supporting faster root-cause analysis.
Strong documentation, communication, and collaboration skills, with the ability to explain technical decisions clearly to engineering and business stakeholders.
A practical, collaborative mindset with the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced engineering environment.
Familiarity with observability, system monitoring, capacity planning, and service management practices.
Experience participating in project delivery, including requirements analysis, implementation planning, execution, and stakeholder communication.
This role requires being onsite in the Rocklin, CA office Monday through Thursday.
